Torn between Devon countryside and the coast? No need to make any rash decisions – just head for Lane Barton Holidays, a pop-up site tucked away on a former farm in rural North Devon and only 15 minutes’ drive from the sea at Buck’s Mills. Accommodation here is in a very fine bell tent, surrounded by spectacular views over the Hartland Peninsula. All prettied up with pennants and fairy lights, the bell tent has its own eco-friendly up-cycled shower and compostable toilet, plus a barbecue and seating outside for alfresco feasts. Handy facilities found inside include a camping stove, kettle and other kitchen utensils (as well as a starter pack of tea and coffee), a double bed (linen provided, towels on request), storage boxes for your gear and cosy seating. There is ample space for cars but if it’s wet, you won’t be able to park in the field, meaning a short stroll to your pitch. The farm is about 20 minutes’ walk from the local village of Woolsery/Woolfardisworthy, where there’s a mini-mart for all your essentials and a pub serving locally sourced food as well as takeaway fish and chips. Many seaside outings are possible, starting with Clovelly (10 minutes’ drive), a fishing village clinging to the cliff side, and the whitewashed town of Bideford (25 minutes) straddling the River Torridge. The surfing resorts of Woolacombe and Saunton Sands are both about an hour away by car, as are Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks.

Bell tent

Liked: Everything was brilliant. The tent was amazing and the bed was very comfortable. The couple who owned the land were very very hospitable and extremely warming and helpful. My battery died on my car and they returned from a day trip just to jump start my car with their tractor. Can’t recommend enough how amazing this place is and for an absolute bargain price!!!
