General

  • Peaceful site on a working farm 15 minutes' drive from Barnstaple
  • Part of the 2,700-acre National Trust Arlington estate
  • Exmoor National Park and Devon beaches within half an hour's drive

South Town Farm is a small and friendly north Devon site is on a 200-acre working farm, part of the spectacular 2,700-acre National Trust Arlington estate and its miles of footpaths through woods and farmland.

Pitches are spread across two roomy fields, with plenty of space for relaxation or running about. This is a site for families who want to play games, roam around nature spotting, build campfires and stargaze; it's all safe and secure too, as the pitches are kept car free; the only wheels allowed on this patch are attached to the wheelbarrows used for transporting your kit.

It’s highly likely that you’ll want to utilise some of this space for a cookout, and you’re most welcome to do so if you bring your own barbecue or firepit. The site also has a limited number of complimentary firepits you can borrow and logs can be purchased on site. As it's an off-grid site, you’ll want to bring a torch along too, to avoid late-night stumbles as you make your way to the compost toilets and warm showers.

As well as being a good spot for local wanders, South Town Farm’s handily placed for roaming the Exmoor National Park and the beaches of the Devon coast. Barnstaple, 15 minutes away, is the place for your town amenities, including supermarkets, restaurants and pubs serving food; even closer to home, a farm shop is within five minutes' drive.

South Town Farm is a hidden gem in North Devon. The fields and farm house are idyllic and the facilities are spotless. We stayed in the shepherds hut and it was perfect! It had everything you could want for a weekend off grid. Dani and Murray were super friendly and helpful - such a lovely place.

The only thing I would say is bring a head torch for the toilets at night.

This is the third time I've stayed at South Town Farm. Thanks again to Danni and Murray for their friendliness, the space for children to play, the sound of owls, chickens, sheep, trees and silence, the delightful waymarked walk around the farm, for pointing out the hedgehogs, and this time for some very tasty home-grown courgettes!
A great location for staying absolutely put or for visiting Exmoor and the coast.

The view, the sunsets, the peaceful surroundings except for the sound of the farm animals and the birds, the simple but well though-out facilities, the clever idea of marking out pitches and connecting paths with mown grass in a meadow, and finally the very friendly and helpful owners.

    Everything!
Once again we had a brilliant time at STF. We returned for a 2nd year and braved the winds and rain for 10days! The kids didn’t even notice it and loved meeting new friends and running free in the beautiful setting. The pitches are spacious and the atmosphere was peaceful and friendly. Dani and Murray are outstanding hosts, so welcoming and accommodating they work incredibly hard to keep the landscape natural. They even cut a little path between pitches for us and our friends, which was such a lovely touch! Dani keeps all the facilities very clean, which makes such a difference when you are wild camping. I can’t recommend STF enough for beautiful views, a peaceful vibe and the loveliest of hosts but ssssh don’t tell anyone…

We left our home in the driving rain with some trepidation about our camping holiday but our fears were dispelled on arrival.
Our hosts were very welcoming, charming and helpful. They have put a lot of thought and care into the set-up of campsite. The kitchen area is well designed and the composting toilets and shower very clean. There is a lot of information on local attractions including the handwritten chalk board with regular updates of interest.
The setting is spectacular and photos really don't do it justice with views of the beautiful rolling hills. The landscaping is particularly tastefully done with lots of natural grasses and the campsites are well spaced out.
We very much enjoyed the location being nestled in the countryside with lots of walking available immediately from the campsite but equally very close to Barnstaple for supplies. We also explored the scenic coast (so many options to choose from) and hope to visit again sometime soon to spend more time visiting Exmoor.
Our teenage daughters loved this camping holiday with the range of options including country walks, campfires, coastal adventure and touristic shopping (fudge!). However it was also nice to see many little people wandering about the campsite in their welly boots enjoying playing freely.
We came away from holiday smitten with the delights of Devon and would highly recommend this beautifully maintained campsite.

    Disliked:

A few more mirrors available with a shelf (possibly outside the kitchen and the shower) so those people who need to spend a little more time attending to braces or make up etc can do so.

From the manager...

Wow, this is a beautiful review, thank you so much for taking the time to post it. We're glad you enjoyed your stay, despite the rain, it was lovely to meet you and your family and look forward to seeing you again. Thank you for your suggestion of more shelves, we'll look into it for next season.

Local attractions

As you’re settled on the Arlington estate, you’ll want to explore your domain a little – as well as a lengthy network of footpaths and adventure play trails, there’s also a splendid stately home that houses the National Trust Carriage Museum. If that’s fired you up for more walks, Heddon Valley (20 minutes’ drive) is popular for its sea views, and there are routes galore around the Exmoor National Park (15 minutes). Horse riding, kayaking, coasteering and heaps more antics can be had around the park too.

Away from Exmoor, the traffic-free Tarka Trail, running from Barnstaple, is a good bet for a bike ride, or you could take your rods for a day of fishing at Wistland Pound Reservoir or Bratton Water (both about five minutes away by car). Surfers or surf wannabes can hit the beaches and surf schools of Saunton Sands and Woolacombe with a drive of half an hour or so.

After watching animal antics on the farm, take a look at the more exotic creatures over at Exmoor Zoo, 10 minutes away and home to all sorts of beasties from around the globe.
