  • No-frills site on Bodmin Moor, with easy access from A30
  • A 15-minute drive from Bodmin and 25 minutes from the Eden Project
  • A short walk from Colliford Lake; play area and animals on site
If you’re aiming to keep things simple on your Cornwall break, the back-to-basics site at Colliford Tavern could be the place for you. It’s in a wonderful spot in the centre of Bodmin Moor, with views to nearby Colliford Lake and easy access from the speedy A30 (a handy feature for your days out). The site is within the grounds of a former tavern, which the new owners are in the process of restoring – and although the pub remains closed for the time being there will be a catering van stopping by on site from time to time. Upgrading the tavern and the campsite is a long-term project, so there are just simple facilities in place for now – guests have access to toilets, showers, a chemical disposal point and a washing-up area, and there’s also a play area and a number of farmyard animals to entertain the kids. You’ll be able to see Colliford Lake from the site – and also take the short walk down there for a day of fishing if you like; day permits are available locally for those who want to have a go. Elsewhere nearby are popular spots like Dozmary Pool (the rumoured resting place of King Arthur’s sword Excalibur) and the world’s largest classical stone labyrinth at Kerdroya, less than a mile away. Barbecues are permitted on site and there are picnic tables to serve your meals on; Bodmin (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to source supplies.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Lovely peaceful location, beautiful scenery, the staff were very friendly and helpful and made us feel welcome. The little bar is nice, generally a great site, we personally loved the location as it felt like you were miles from anywhere, just in a pine forest near the lake.

Disliked The toilets and shower block were a bit dated and not the cleanest, but served their purpose.
The washing up facilities were also dated and very basic, but everything you need.

Liked Lovely quiet site in the forest with stunning views of the Moor and lake. If you like quiet and basic this is the site for you. The facilities are clean but could do with a tidy up and the outside area's could do with some general maintenance. They could do with separate toilets from the showers and more toilets but they are clean. The bin area could do with screening off so you can't see the bins. It has a good children's playground and the staff are friendly. We didn't use the facilities as we had our caravan with our own. They have lovely clamping pods but if you were paying for them you would say the facilities let them down. We did use the bar and pool table. We will definitely be returning as we found it very relaxing even though it was basic. I would say though if your looking for quality then this is not the site for you!! Right off the A30 but you could not hear this.

Disliked Nothing. Just needs some TLC and general maintenance.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re delighted to hear that you enjoyed the peaceful surroundings, stunning views, and the quiet atmosphere our site offers. It’s also wonderful to know that you appreciated our friendly staff and the children’s playground.

We truly value your constructive comments regarding the facilities and general maintenance. Your suggestions are very helpful, and we are continuously working on improvements to enhance our guests' experience. We understand the importance of maintaining the site to its full potential and will focus on addressing the areas you mentioned, including the need for separate toilets, additional screening around the bin area, and overall maintenance.

We’re pleased to hear that you found your stay relaxing and that you plan to return. We look forward to welcoming you back and providing an even better experience on your next visit.

Liked Beautiful place. All the staff are amazing. The camping area is very nice and clean. The toilets and showers are spotless. Our kids have enjoyed a lot. Only few minutes walking distance there is lake. If you love the nature this is the best place to stay.

I have done the research and this is one of the darkest places in UK. You can see all the stars and will feel like you can touch the stars.🌟.

We had few drinks and eaten in the restaurant and also used the WiFi in there. The food was nice. Very good service. Thank you guys for your hospitality.

Local attractions

History buffs should find lots round here to entertain, starting with some literary history. Five minutes’ drive from base is the Jamaica Inn (yes, the Daphne du Maurier one), and its Smugglers Museum is well worth a visit. Poldark fans will know Cornwall as mining country, and that’s well catered for hereabouts too: it’s 15 minutes from the site to Carnglaze Caverns for underground tours of the old slate mine and visits to a subterranean lake. More upmarket history can be delved into at some of the stately manors in the vicinity – Pencarrow and Lanhydrock are both within 25 minutes, and it’s 40 minutes to Prideaux Place. Prefer history to have a more urban bent? Make the 15-minute journey to Bodmin and explore the jail, regimental museum and town museum. For coast days, head to the fishing village of Port Isaac or the beaches around Newquay (both 35 minutes’ drive); staying inland, you could wander around Golitha Falls National Nature Reserve (15 minutes), or explore the incomparable Eden Project (half an hour).
