Trenethick Farm is a wild camping spot in the small village of Mount Hawke, near Truro in deepest Cornwall. This is a cracking site for families eager to get in the sea, as it’s only a 10-minute drive to the beaches of Porthtowan and St Agnes (both of which have lifeguards in the summer) and there are plenty of other glorious beaches nearby too. Just a five-minute walk from base camp is a peaceful woodland walk for children and dogs to have a run around safely, or you can survey the rugged coastline of north Cornwall from the South West Coast Path (10 minutes’ drive). And don’t forget, you’re in Poldark country here, about 10 minutes' drive from Wheal Coates, a popular beauty spot between Chapel Porth and St Agnes Head (and a fine place from which to watch the sun set). Back-to-basics facilities on site are limited to portable toilets, rubbish disposal, a drinking water tap and a designated barbecue area. Nearby Mount Hawke village has two handy shops, a post office and even a pet shop if you find you've left Fido’s treats behind. There’s also a play park and a well-known indoor/outdoor skatepark if your teens are desperate to escape the family for a while. The area's also got several cafés, takeaways, restaurants and traditional pubs serving Cornish ales and tasty local food, so you shouldn't starve if you don't want to cook. And as the site is close to the main A30, there’s easy access to Truro (15 minutes) and Newquay (30 minutes) and for more pubs and restaurants.
