  • Quiet Cornish farm site with spectacular sea views
  • A mile from Mawnan Smith; 15 minutes' drive from Falmouth
  • Play area; footpath to the beach, 1.5 miles away
'The best of Cornwall at your fingertips' is how the Penwarne Campsite team describe their patch. A description that you'd be hard-pressed to quibble with given its stunning sea views, easy access to Falmouth and area of outstanding natural beauty location. Penwarne Campsite makes a credible claim to being one of the oldest in all of Cornwall, having welcomed guests here since the 1920s. The site grounds have been worked by the Mann family since 1886, so your hosts are long-standing locals with lots of insider tips about the surrounding area. Although the farm is located inland, Maenporth beach is a mile and a half away and can be directly accessed via a well-maintained footpath. Walks in local woodlands are also within easy reach, and when it's time for a pint you're also just a mile from Mawnan Smith's village pub. On-site facilities are another of Penwarne Campsite's strong points: guests have a play area, toilet block and shower. Well-behaved dogs are allowed here too, and you're more than welcome to set up a barbecue and campfire (as long as a few simple safety rules are followed, of course).

What customers say

Penwarne Farm Campsite gets props for its lekker views, big pitches, and chilled vibe. Staff are often mentioned as lekker and helpful, and the spot's great for exploring. It’s a natural, relaxed place, though some say the facilities are a bit basic. A few grumbles about cleaning and bins, but overall a good value for a quiet escape.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The view

Disliked Very basic and minimal:
No lights in the toilet cubicles
Not enough toilets and showers
Shower very basic, push button
Not always warm water
Full of spiders and cobwebs
Rowdy guests partying until 3am
Playground broken and falling apart
Rubbish everywhere
No hot water in the dish wash area
No cafe or shop
No staff apart from daily loo clean
Rubbish bins full to bursting

Facilities too basic for the number of people on site. Needs major investment.

Electric grass pitch

Liked Unfortunately we only have one positive comment to make and that was the position of the site for great scenic walks .

Disliked No campsite staff seen anywhere at all.
Cleanliness of toilets and shower block very poor .
All outdoor buildings need updating or knocking down .
Because of unsupervised check ins ,the campers were making their own boundaries of pitch size .
The campers next to our pitch even had their fire pit and barbecue right on the edge of our pitch even had, which was a potential fire hazard to our camper van .We had to move it over thus making no where for out chairs and picnic table or awning .When we mentioned this to the campers ,they did not speak English and instead turned on their car radio and left the doors open and engine running .So obviously knew we weren’t happy and obviously trying to annoy us .

Electric grass pitch

Liked Amenities were standout, it makes a difference when everything is clean and tidy. The showers were warm and spacious; toilets always well stocked; having multiple sinks and kettles was also really helpful.
The pitches worked well, well enough space for an 8 person camp but near enough others so that there was a close environment between us and other campers.
Electric pitch worked without an issues.
Really good amount of taps

Disliked Lack of walking routes, but this isn’t something that you can change and we may not have looked hard enough.

Electric grass pitch

Liked We have just got back from a 3 night break at Penwarne Campsite. I have stayed here before a couple of years ago. We all had a really fantastic time, the campsite was quiet and peaceful with fantastic views. Plenty of washing facilities, toilets, showers, pay for washer/dryers for clothes. There is a play park for children on site. It’s tucked away in a quiet spot with plenty of decent sized pitches that aren’t too close to each other. We got our large sized 6 man tunnel tent up with ample parking for the car right next to it and could have even had a pop up gazebo on it too and room for the dog to be tied on the lead to the ground.
The text from the owner on the day of the visit is a nice touch, we didn’t “check in” as such which wasn’t an issue as I knew where everything was from the previous visit. Nicola also let us know about the air show from the red arrows we missed it as we were out, but being Lincolnshire/Yorkshire based have seen them plenty of times.
All in all a fantastic visit we all love Cornwall and using this place as a base to go off exploring is ideal due to its location not far to Falmouth harbour, St Ives etc. Would highly recommend Porthcuno beach too about an hour from the site, literally like being abroad!!

Disliked The only down side was the 5 sec push button shower, really could do with some new shower valves as they should stay on longer than that (being a plumbing and heating engineer I would know) also could do with some detachable shower heads as the mrs didn’t want to get her hair wet and due to angle of the fixed heads you can’t contort yourself to not really get your hair wet. Only a small thing and easily changed. Was kind of hoping you would do the home made stone baked pizzas again from when we came last time :(

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The site in location, views and space.

Disliked The Toilets and Showers were abysmal. There were not enough of either for the number of customers. They were not well mantained or cleaned often enough. In some cases the lights where not working and the floors were consistantly pooled with water. For this reason, I would NOT recommend using Penwarne unless you have your own toilet and shower or washing facilities, especially those with families.

The Non-electric pitches are not level.

Local attractions

It's a pretty place, is Penwarne. Located in a coastal area of outstanding natural beauty, this site has plenty of choice for excursions around and about. Sticking locally, you might like to sail by ferry over the Helford (five minutes' drive) for trips to secluded spots like Bosahan Cove, or to stay on the north bank of the river to survey the seasonal blooms at Trebah Garden (also five minutes). Green-fingered guests have lots more foliage to take in around this part of the coast – there's Glendurgan Garden (five minutes) next to the South West Coast Path and the jungle-like oasis at Penjerrick (five minutes), both of which can be comfortably reached on foot from base if you fancy a stretch of the legs. Of course, peaceful days homing in on all that horticulture might not be the best of bets if you've got kids to entertain. Handily, this part of Cornwall is also full of family-friendly attractions like Flambards Theme Park (25 minutes) and the Lappa Valley's steam railway (45 minutes), which can be easily interspersed with the calm and quiet of Kynance Cove (40 minutes) or ice creams on Falmouth seafront (15 minutes).
