  • North Cornwall farm site with uninterrupted sea views
  • Boscastle five minutes' drive; 15 minutes to Tintagel Castle
  • Private shortcut to the coast path; bar and homemade snacks on site
You can pick your own pitch on the campsites at Castle Beeny Farm, and there’s likely to be very little jostling for the top spots – and that’s because this clifftop site has uninterrupted views out over Cornwall’s Atlantic coast from most of the field. And what views they are, taking in the Beeny Sisters cliffs, Lundy Island and the tiny islands that dot the coast towards Newquay. It’s a stunning vista at any time, but as it’s west-facing it’s particularly gorgeous at sunset – as dusk falls, get your barbecue going, pour a drink or two and get set for a colourful show. Alternatively, you can grab drinks from the site’s own bar (called The Cliffhanger, in a nod to Thomas Hardy, who drew inspiration from this area when writing A Pair of Blue Eyes) and pick up homemade biltong and driwors to snack on. Want to take a closer view at the coastline? Of course you do – so it’s handy that you’ll have access to a private shortcut to Fire Beacon Point, on the South West Coast Path. From there you can walk south to Boscastle or north to Crackington Haven – and there are numerous other coast walks and beaches nearby too. It’s a simple setup here so that the site has a minimal impact on the environment, but you’ll have access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area. Note that there’s no drinking water supply though – you can pick that up (along with your other supplies) at the farm shop in Boscastle or the village store in Marshgate (both five minutes’ drive).

Local attractions

If you’d like to explore the area’s literary connections a bit more, take a walk into the lush Valency Valley to visit St Julitta's Church (40 minutes’ walk), renovated by Thomas Hardy in 1867 and where he fell in love. Other legendary figures associated with the area include King Arthur – learn more about all that at Tintagel Castle (15 minutes’ drive) and Merlin’s Cave (20 minutes). Once you’ve seen the stretch of coast by the site, set off to see more of the hotspots of north Cornwall. You’ll have plenty of choice, with the likes of Bossiney Cove (15 minutes), Crackington Haven (15 minutes), Widemouth Bay (20 minutes) and Trebarwith Strand (25 minutes) all close by. The fishing village of Boscastle (five minutes) is worth a stop too, for its indie shops and The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic. Turning inland, you may like to visit Davidstow Airfield and Cornwall at War Museum (15 minutes), go walking on Bodmin Moor (25 minutes) or visit the grand estate of Pencarrow House & Garden (40 minutes).
