  • Quiet site in the Kent Downs, a 15-minute drive from Faversham
  • Leeds Castle 20 minutes’ drive; Canterbury and Whitstable half an hour
  • A short walk from the nearest farm shop; walks in the local area
If you’re in charge of organising the family rally this year, you might want to consider booking at Palace Farm Campsite, in the Kent Downs National Landscape. You’ll be staying on a large field in the village of Doddington, with rural views all around – yet only a 15-minute drive from the towns of Sittingbourne and Faversham. If you value your peace, you’ll be glad to hear that this is a quiet site after 10pm. Please note that this is strictly enforced – when it comes to guests, at least. There are no measures in place to keep woodpeckers, owls and pheasants from lulling you to sleep with their songs and hoots. You can explore the local area on foot or by bike (the owners will be happy to point you to the best paths and bridleways), stopping at a traditional country pub for a few ales. Alternatively, you can tee off at Faversham Golf Club or fish at the Willows Angling Centre, and there is a swimming pool in Faversham to keep the kids occupied on rainy days (all 15 minutes’ drive). Canterbury is half an hour away and well worth a visit for its spectacular medieval cathedral. Well equipped and environmentally conscious, the site has solar panels that assist with heating water for the showers and washing-up sinks; there are flushing toilets and a parent-and-baby washroom, plus recycling points. The nearest farm shop is a mere seven-minute walk away.

What customers say

A neat, peaceful campsite with big, flat spots and clean, no-frills facilities. Owners are super friendly and helpful, and the location's great for exploring. It's usually quiet, though can get a bit noisy when busy. Fire pit and drone rules, plus limited loos and showers at peak times, were noted. Good value for a country escape.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Love this chilled out no frills campsite. Great sized pitches. Amazing that with only 2 toilets you never have to queue but we hàve been several times and never quèued. Liz keeps the toilets immaculate, she is there several times a day.

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Excellent campsite, beautifully maintained with marvellous spacious pitches that are laid out so allow plenty of free room to play Frisbee etc.
Grass was kept nice and short, showers were hot, clean and looked after. Toilets and washing up station was perfect.

If you pitch at the far end of the site its a (leisurely) few minute walk to the toilet block.

The owners make you feel right at home and and always available, with fire pits and logs in stock ready to purchase.

Disliked That I had to go back home!

Non-electric grass campervan, tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked We only booked the site the morning of arrival, to test our new campervan. We didn't travel far but found this site. It was perfect, we took our 2 year old and 2 dogs, there's no play park or anything, but the field is large enough for children to play either round your pitch or in the middle of all pitches.. The site was easy to find, nice and quiet even though there was plenty of people camping. The toilet block was a short walk for everyone. We didn't use the shower block as we was only there for the one night to test the van and left by 10am to go home. We drove past a pub on the way to the site, so walked there after we set up which took around 10 minutes (probably quicker if you don't have a toddler). We will definitely return for a longer duration next time.

Disliked There was only 2 toilets so queued nearly every time, which is fine for myself, but with a 2 year old who's only recently potty trained bit of a pain, but still was not a massive issue and not a complaint, just FYI.

From the manager: Hi Rebecca, thanks for your lovely review. Sorry you had to queue to use the toilets, there are 3 toilets, the 3rd is a disabled room that has a sign saying "Please Give Priority to Disabled and Parents with young Children" It was our busiest weekend of the year we are aware that sometimes a group or a family all arrive together, we clean regularly throughout the day and sometimes have to wait to clean a cubicle, but seldom have to wait for more than a minute or two. Our toilet/shower ratio is at the busiest times 1:30 which is far more than the recommended ratio of 1:60 by most camping organisations.
Unfortunately we were not at the campsite when you arrived, normally we explain everything to new arrivals in person.

Local attractions

If you’ve ever considered making your own beer at home, you might want to take a tour of Shepherd Neame (15 minutes’ drive), Britain’s oldest brewery. You’ll learn all about the ingredients needed to craft a fine beer, from water to malted barley and hops, and take part in a guided tasting of Kentish ales and lagers. There’s heaps to do for the whole family at Leeds Castle (20 minutes). While the adults swoon over the glamorous 1930s decor in the castle itself, the kids can climb, slide and jump at the adventure playground or get lost (and then, hopefully, found) in the maze. There is also a Go Ape Tree Top Challenge with ziplines and hanging bridges, plus falconry displays. Fancy a day at the seaside? Whitstable (half an hour) has wide pebbly beaches, a working harbour where you can sample freshly shucked oysters, and a promenade for walking and cycling that goes past the Tankerton Slopes (with their colourful beach huts) and all the way to a skate park.
