  • Quiet site in the grounds of a coarse fishery a mile from Sandwich
  • A 25-minute drive from Canterbury; 15 to Howletts Wild Animal Park
  • Seven well-stocked fishing lakes and an on-site café
Sandwich Lakes is a quiet 55-acre site in the grounds of a coarse fishery a mile from the centre of Sandwich. As you might imagine, this is a top spot to settle in if you're into fishing, as the fishery has seven lakes stocked with perch, tench, bream, roach and rudd. You can also fish for common, tiger and mirror carp: whoppers of up to 35lb have been recorded here (not to mention all the ones that got away...). A tackle and bait shop along with rod hire takes care of the practical side. The on-site café serves hot meals and snacks all day from early morning to early evening. Supermarkets are a 15-minute drive away in Sandwich, along with a brimming catch of pubs, cafés and restaurants for when you fancy something more substantial. While you're in Sandwich, the Secret Gardens are well worth snooping around too... Three and a half acres of lush greenery around a Georgian manor house created in 1911, they're just the ticket for cool walks on hot days, especially when topped off with cream teas.

Liked Very friendly staff, great welcome on arrival. Ladies showers and toilets lovely and clean. Cafe on site which did a lovely cooked breakfast and coffee in the morning.
Will definitely take advantage of the fishing lakes next time.

Disliked Mens showers not working properly the morning we left. Just a dribble of water.
30 min walk to Sandwich on a busy road, but got an uber back after a night out.
wifi only works at the camp office and cafe.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Quite a nice site we've stayed at before.

Disliked The new hard standings are tiny and the 3 we tried weren't level, it's not rocket science to get a hard standing level. I saw many examples of sharp bits of tiles in the hardcore used in the new road and hard standing which could damage tyres. The shower block is good but unfortunately some fisherman leave mud in the toilets and showers and don't bother cleaning it up. My wife found food around the sinks in the washing up area on both days of our stay. It's a shame that some people behave this way. Unfortunately it ruins how others enjoy their stay at Sandwich Lakes. Occasionally someone from the site team should ride around the site on their quad bike to check the rules are being adhered to, we had a foreign family next to us who decided to smoke us out with their barbecue, this type of thing would be seen and stopped by a member of the site team during a site check. The cafe does a great breakfast but they stop selling food by 2pm which is very early and it closes at 5pm. Someone's missing a trick there by not carrying food on into the evening...

We will be back ASAP

Local attractions

You're never too far from the coast in Kent, and a 10-minute trip takes you to the Sandwich and Pegwell Bay National Nature Reserve for walking trails and wildlife spotting. Ramsgate (15 minutes' drive) has a rich amount to offer, with a sandy beach, seal spotting and fishing trips from the harbour, and a maritime museum. If you're hankering after some more history, Richborough (five minutes) has a well-preserved Roman fort and amphitheatre. A minute from the site, meanwhile, the White Mill Rural Heritage Centre is far more than a striking building to photograph; the exhibits and outhouses of this preserved 19th-century smock mill record a whole vanished way of Kentish country life. For cobbled lanes and cathedral tours, Canterbury is 20 minutes away. After that, connect with your wild side at Howletts Wild Animal Park (20 minutes), a conservation project rather than a zoo which houses and protects the future of 400 species, many of them endangered. After hanging with the elephant herds and greeting the baby rhinos, Dreamland Margate (also 20 minutes) makes you feel like you've stepped into another universe, with traditional fairground rides and amusements bringing the former days of seaside entertainment back to life with a whoop.
