  • Quiet Kent holiday park five minutes' drive from the coast
  • A mile and a half from New Romney; Camber Sands 15 minutes' drive
  • Well-equipped shared kitchen and wifi hotspot available for all guests
For a peaceful holiday spot in south-eastern Kent, take a look at Romney Meadows Caravan and Camping Park, a mile and a half outside the small town of New Romney. Guests staying here have access to gorgeous green fields, footpaths, beaches, nature reserves and the Cinque Ports towns within a few minutes' drive or cycle. This small and well-maintained campsite has all the basic modern facilities you would expect, plus a few extras like a well-equipped shared kitchen and a wifi hotspot that all guests are welcome to use. This is a quiet and considerate spot for restful stays where kids, dogs and barbecues are all welcome. The local landscape is full of history: once buried under the English Channel, this area became an important Roman port, before becoming a smuggler's haven in the 18th century and playing a major role in the Napoleonic Wars. You can learn more at Romney Marsh Visitor Centre (10 minutes' drive), or ask the knowledgeable site staff, who will be happy to help point you in the right direction. Nearby New Romney has several supermarkets and pubs, plus a long stretch of shingle beach for scenic sunset walks.

A super neat, clean, and friendly spot. Great facilities, chilled vibe, and helpful staff. Lovely flat pitches and a good base for exploring. Just a heads-up on the hand dryers and shower timers. Highly recommended, many are keen to come back!

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Well organised and laid out site with level pitches. Friendly owners. Clean toilet/shower facilities. Laundrette and kitchen. Even a small library with DVDs. The shop was well stocked and reasonably priced. Cafe on site was handy if you didn’t fancy cooking. We had a great pitch overlooking the fields. Radio playing in toilets, word search on back of the door and the herb garden were nice little touches. Location was good and a 20 minute walk across fields into New Romney. Will definitely be back.

Disliked Being really picky now: hand dryer in toilets not powerful enough to dry hands, showers on timed push switch - duration too short, water in shower slightly too hot for me and can’t be adjusted, WiFi dropped out on Sunday (not an issue as had mobile data).

Electric optional hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked Toilets and showers very clean good facilities.

Disliked Rigorous booking in time, rip off electric prices if you exceed the amount you are allowed you are charged extra but if you don't use you electric you do not get a refund, the entrance barrier in the total wrong place when busy leaving you queuing in the main road, when motor homes use grey waste area you can't get your car out of car park.

Electric optional grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The staff were very friendly and the campsite was in a nice location. There was a nice walk the staff recommended to New Romney through a wheat field which was very nice. The shop had a good amount of items in there. The showers had a good pressure. There was a fridge/freezer and a microwave so made food and cooking very easy. Water tap was close to our pitch. Felt very safe. Pitch was also very level.

Disliked Ground was quite firm and must’ve had rocks underneath as getting pegs in and out was very difficult. Toilets/showers were quite far from our pitch.

Local attractions

The Kent coast is full of varied things to do: there’s birdspotting at RSPB Dungeness (10 minutes’ drive) for those looking for something a bit different from classic bucket-and-spade days, while Camber Sands’ beach and dunes (15 minutes) are on hand just down the road for those in the mood for ice creams, fish and chips or a dip in the sea. To spend more time outdoors, you could head off for a round or two at Lydd Golf Club (five minutes) or take the family off for the day to Port Lympne Reserve (25 minutes), a safari park surrounded by gorgeous green countryside. To keep the kids busy, there's more to see and do a little further down the coast at the Shipwreck Museum (40 minutes), while those on grownup getaways can get away for a bit of retail therapy at Ashford's designer outlets (20 minutes). Hankering to see a bit of history? Head up to the Royal Military Canal (15 minutes) for heritage walks by the water's edge, or hot-foot it to Dover Castle's tunnels (40 minutes) or Bodiam Castle and its moat (40 minutes).
