  • Pitches in a Hampshire hay meadow between the coast and countryside
  • On the New Forest border, 10 minutes’ drive from Milford on Sea
  • Small, quiet site with field kitchen and hot tubs (additional charge)
Evenings soaking eating alfresco after days spent sailing from Milford on Sea or horse-riding in the New Forest? If that gets a ‘yes’ from you, you’ll be set for a stay at Lightfoot’s Farm on the southern border of the New Forest National Park. A 10-minute drive from Milford on Sea and a short drive from the ‘forest proper’, as the locals call it, the location is convenient for all sorts, like sailing, canoeing, paddleboarding, fishing, horse riding, hiking and archery. Lightfoot's Farm is a three-acre smallholding with just a handful of pitches in the hay meadow. The owners grow a few fruit and nut trees in the meadow, along with vegetables for the owners and their friends, and they run a commercial vertical farm growing microgreens and micro herbs. Those herbs are mostly for direct sales to local businesses but there are always a few in the field kitchen’s fridge for guests to help themselves to. If you’d like to have a little look around the farm, just ask. For more splendid eats, there are several good eateries within a few minutes’ drive (including a fine seafood selection in Milford on Sea). Facilities for guests include picnic tables, firepits and that handy field kitchen for sorting your meals and snacks. And of course there are also those hot tubs: woodfired and available to book on site on a first-come, first-served basis for an additional charge. They’re just the place to unplug, unwind and spend an evening listening to the meadow’s soundtrack as the sun sets.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Nice location with convenient public transport links (bus from New Milton stops directly outside but not Sundays/BH). Campsite was quiet, informal and in a nice natural setting.

Disliked: Washing/toilet facilities were basic but adequate.

Liked: Suited me down to the ground.
Like all camping experiences this one was enhanced by glorious weather. Pitched up in the long grass left for nature. Quickly felt part of it as I sat listenig to the birds and watching the insects mull about the field.
Later I was joined by Roe Dear and a Fox. Even had a very curious Drake in the tent. I named him Sir Francis.
Magical stay. Thank you.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Area - great position for exploring the local area. Many eonderful beaches and New Forest 10-20mins drive

Field kitchen - this was a fantastic facility, well equipped with gas stove, fridge, freezer, electricity, pots and pans. Large kitchen and plenty of seating. Absolutely made our rainy few days bearable. And good for socialising with other families.

Disliked: The grass was longish and their were many mole hills, which made getting about hard, wet, work. I guess you probably can't do much about the molehills, but has the grass been cut it would have saved us all getting so wet and would have been easier to get about.

No lighting in the toilets and showers

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The location was good - drivable spots in the new forest / to the beach.
The kitchen was well stocked and very welcome in the rain.

Disliked: The toilets were awful - we've stayed at many sites with compost loos but we had to drive our kid elsewhere because they absolutely refused to use them. No lights in the toilets either. Ran out of sawdust. One didn't even have anything to scoop the sawdust etc. And only two of three toilets were in use (there were a few campers there)
The grass was long which was horrible when walking about in the rain.
Nothing was walkable in the new forest, so driving only.
We had no check in or contact with the host regarding our camping even when we packed up to leave a night early.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The option to use a hot tub was a nice feature, although organisation of log sales etc was poor.

Disliked: The toilet facilities were absolutely appalling. I understand and appreciate compost toilets, these were not executed correctly to say the least. Our young children were heaving at using a toilet were the previous few dozen occupants waste was sitting merely millimetres below the height of the toilet seat. Hugely unsanitary and honestly a health risk.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Easy to get to, pitch your tent up anywhere in the designated area. Hot showers, firepits and barbeques provided. Communal kitchen was a really great thing, with a fridge and freezer available.

Disliked: The shower and toilet facilities could benefit from a little upkeep, spiderwebs with dead, dry spiders were around - nothing too grisly, but a little bit of a sweep once in a while would be nice. No walkable routes around, so it’s not the greatest choice if you like roaming around the area.

Local attractions

You might be quite busy surfing, sea kayaking or windsurfing in Milford on Sea (10 minutes’ drive), but when you get a chance, it’s right next to Hurst Castle (10 minutes). Built by Henry VIII, it’s almost as formidable as its original owner. Set slightly out to sea, this is now a scenic spot for picnics and games with kids. Those seeking awesome rock formations and signature arches might want to take a day trip to the Jurassic Coast (from an hour and 15 minutes). Closer by, there’s the gorgeous Solent Way Walk from Lymington for those who’d like to take in the local coastline. Of course, there’s even more action in the city of Southampton (40 minutes). Whether you visit the Sky Museum to see vintage aircraft, the art gallery or the Titanic model in the SeaCity museum, you should have plenty of preparation for the lively scenes in Bournemouth (35 minutes), which has classic beach huts, watersports, museums, amusement arcades and a beachside zipwire – the whole lot.
