  • Well-maintained, peaceful Hampshire site on the edge of Hook
  • A half-hour drive to Winchester; direct access to walking trails
  • Simple pitches within walking distance of pubs and train station
What a handy location for a break in the Hampshire countryside – High Ridge is just on the edge of the village of Hook, about a mile from its train station and within easy walking distance of its pubs, shops and takeaways. Walks around here don’t just involve heading to the village – there’s a footpath right next to the pitching field that leads to an extensive network of rural paths and byways, some of which can take you to an excellent country pub for a pint of something local. You can also stroll along to Tylney Hall for afternoon tea or a round on the golf course. Looking a little further afield, there are more walks in the South Downs National Park and North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or you could plan a day trip to Winchester or Marwell Zoo (or even London, given the proximity of the train station). Back at base you’ll be staying in a peaceful 20-acre field that’s been kept very much as nature intended other than the addition of a portable toilet – just the ticket for those who like the idea of wild camping but appreciate having toilet facilities on hand…

Local attractions

You may well spot some wildlife on site, but there are also plenty of opportunities around here to see larger animals too, starting with the chance to cuddle farmyard animals at Miller’s Ark Animals and walk with alpacas at Pennybridge Farm (both five minutes’ drive). A day among the penguins, parrots and flamingos at Birdworld (25 minutes) is another great option, as is a trip to 140-acre Marwell Zoo (40 minutes). Keeping things rural, you could head to Wellington Country Park (15 minutes) for animal petting sessions, a ride on the miniature train and a bit of fun at the splash zone, or learn about lives of the past at Rural Life Living Museum (half an hour). There’s more history on display in the Tudor mansion at National Trust - The Vyne (15 minutes) and Jane Austen’s House (25 minutes). Winchester (half an hour) mixes up the old and new with attractions including the cathedral and the planetarium at Winchester Science Centre.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: In my camper van I found myself the only one booked in that night, so it was lovely to have a huge, reasonably flat meadow all to myself! The considerate, friendly owner checked I was OK. I will come again!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: I can’t put into words how next level stunning this site was. We stayed is a beautiful hay field and us adults slept under the stars and watched a beautiful meteor shower. The host was ever so accommodating and we took a short walk through the woods to a gorgeous common and country pub. I will be going back every opportunity I humanly can whilst the pop up is open
