  • Dog-friendly, family and rural site in the South Downs
  • Within easy reach of London and 40 minutes from the beach
  • Dog agility course on site and space for walks next door
Spectacular scenery in the South Downs National Park, within easy reach of London and the south coast... and so firmly dog friendly that's there's a dog agility course on site: give a thumbs-up and a pawprint of approval to South Downs Campsite. This site doesn’t just allow dogs, it actively welcomes them. No worries about where you’ll go for walkies around here – there’s a woodland area just behind the site where the canines can take their humanfolk off for a ramble. (A word of warning: there’s a rather enticing stream here, so you might do well to pack a spare towel.) Or you can get your exercise right there in the field by hitting the dog agility course. Never tried one before? Who knows – you may discover a potential champion (or at least have a fairly hilarious time not discovering one). Triumph or heroic failure, a welcome reward awaits you and your mutt at one of the local pubs – there’s a dog-friendly place in South Harting, a couple of minutes’ drive away, and the site owners have compiled a list of several others within a short drive. Back at base, guests can hire firepits or light up campfires for cosy evenings and cooking. Washing-up facilities are on site for plates that weren’t quite licked clean by the dogs; showers and toilets are also provided for guests.

Local attractions

You’re in the middle of the South Downs National Park here, and that means lots of places to get out for scenic walks – perhaps try the nature reserves at Kingley Vale or Butser Hill, or hit the South Downs Way, which is around a 20-minute walk from the site. Having brought your doggie pal along on hols, you’ll not be wanting to leave them on their own while you gallivant around, so the folks on site have compiled a list of dog-friendly days out nearby. Among them are Arundel Castle, the Weald & Downland Living Museum, the ruins of Cowdray Castle and the gorgeous West Dean Gardens. For a blast of sea air, take the 40-minute drive to West Wittering; the East Head area of the beach is open to paddling dogs all year round.
