Travelling in Hampshire? Need a place to rest? Then trot along to The Traveller’s Rest, a cracking countryside spot on the edge of the South Downs National Park and 15 minutes’ drive from Fareham. This is one of those relaxed rural places where you can light up a barbecue to cook over coals while the kids clamber about at the playground, then settle down on your spacious pitch for alfresco eats. Or you could choose to delegate all such endeavours by taking a 20-minute stroll down to one of the local pubs (or a two-minute drive if your legs aren’t up for it). As well as being a lush rural location in its own right, this is also a handy spot for those plotting trips to Portsmouth and Marwell Zoo and rides on the Mid Hants Railway 'Watercress Line’ (all of which are within a half-hour drive). Coastal days and country ones are equally fine options from here: West Wittering beach is 40 minutes away and there are loads of strolls to be had in the scenic surrounds of the South Downs.

Local attractions

A potter around Portsmouth (20 minutes’ drive) is a mighty fine idea: history buffs and seafaring souls will no doubt want to wander around Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and visit the fine collection of notable ships, including the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior and HMS Victory. Once you’ve had your fill of naval history, head a hundred metres into the air for some spectacular Solent views from the Spinnaker Tower’s observation deck. Back down at ground level, amuse yourselves among the animals of Marwell Zoo (20 minutes’ drive) or head to Butser Ancient Farm (20 minutes) to see how folks lived in olden days; there are farm animals here too, along with reconstructed medieval buildings and workshops to brush up on your ancient skills (basket weaving, blacksmithing and the like). Another glimpse into the past is at Jane Austen's House Museum (half an hour away). Keep your heritage days moving at a quicker pace by taking a steam-driven ride on the Mid Hants Railway 'Watercress Line’ from Alresford (half an hour’s drive) or meandering around the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu (45 minutes), where you can come face to face with everything from Formula 1 cars to the flying Ford Anglia from Harry Potter (and there’s a splendid house and gardens to take care of those less enamoured with engines).
