  • Bell tent camping with spacious pitches in New Forest National Park
  • National Motor Museum 10 minutes’ drive; Peppa Pig World half an hour
  • Next to Beaulieu Heath, with access to walking paths; dogs welcome
Bell tent adventures await… at Hampshire’s Roundhill Caravan and Camping Site you can have all the atmosphere of a break that’s immersed in nature but within the approved surroundings of a designated camping area. Settle down here and you’ll be able to spend the night among shady ferns and ancient woodland, sharing the forest views with the ponies that roam freely around the site. Paths crisscross the site, leading to a peaceful pond and out into the forest, so it’s easy to get out for a stroll or a dog walk, and kids should find plenty of places to scamper about and play games. More walks (with or without a dog…)? This site is adjacent to Beaulieu Heath, a former airfield now given over to nature – and more ponies. For outings with a tinge of sea air, it’s about a half-hour drive to the Solent Way coastal trail or pebbly Calshot beach, where you can swim or launch paddleboards and windsurfers. There are heaps of good birdwatching sites in the vicinity, too, including Lepe Country Park (20 minutes) and Keyhaven Marshes (half an hour), a nesting ground for black-headed gulls. The ethos at Roundhill is to create minimal impact on the natural surroundings – this means no toilets or showers on site, and you’ll be asked to follow the New Forest Code to protect the landscape. When the necessities of modern life raise their heads, take a trip to the village of Brockenhurst, two miles away, which has several restaurants and pubs, plus a well-stocked supermarket.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked This site is peaceful and relaxing. I found it to be very clean everywhere and everyone very friendly. The ponies and donkeys are lovely- I have not known such curious donkeys before! The site is well located for walks directly from your ‘front door’ as well as a short drive from the sea - which was wonderfully warm and inviting. The weather was very hot so the absence of showers required a bucket of cold water wash ( no soap as need to maintain the environment) A lovely place to stay.

Local attractions

As well as cars and motorbikes representing vehicle development through the ages, the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu (10 minutes’ drive) has displays on safety features (including crash test dummies) and advertising campaigns, plus special days focusing on specific brands and Q&A sessions with key figures in the world of motoring. For (pretty much) guaranteed sightings of deer at Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary (20 minutes), try to be there between noon and 3pm (April–September), when the herd gathers in the main field for feeding time. Walking and cycling trails weave their way through fir and oak trees in this area of ancient woodland if you'd like to try spotting the animals at different times of day. If you've got younger kids in tow, set off to spend a day with a different kind of animal. Paultons Park Home of Peppa Pig World (half an hour) has gentle rides like miniature trains and sailing boats, and Peppa and her fellow cartoon characters also make regular appearances.
