  • Exclusive-use site with bell tents a 15-minute drive from Winchester
  • Winchester Science Centre 10 minutes’ drive; Portsmouth 45 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; fully equipped kitchen; lounge area with woodburner
Gather your nearest and dearest and make it a party for eight to 12 people (dogs are welcome, too) at The Lambing Shed. This site a 15-minute drive from Winchester gives you exclusive use of its three-acre site – how’s that for luxury? Emperor bell tents come with real beds, memory foam mattresses, duvets and all bed linen (and towels) included. Then there’s a party barn with a double oven, hob, multiple fridges (gotta keep that sparkling wine chilled, right?) and a dishwasher. A nice touch for the hyper-organised among you: the site owners will be happy to accept a food delivery from a local supermarket on your behalf. If you enjoy roaming supermarket aisles, the nearest shops are in Bishop’s Waltham (10 minutes’ drive). An indoor lounge area has a large dining table, leather sofas and a woodburner (wood is supplied and replenished as needed). Want to eat alfresco on a balmy night? No problem: an outdoor dining table is large enough to accommodate your entire party, and the barbecue comes with one bag of charcoal. After dinner, you can all relocate to the straw bales around the large firepit in the main field for a post-dinner spot of stargazing… Oodles of space in the field means you can bring bikes, kites, football goals and any other sporting equipment you think you might need during your luxury break. There are also designated areas for games – from badminton and netball, to croquet and boules. And if you fancy a hike, you’re in the middle of South Downs National Park, with its many walking and cycling routes.

Local attractions

If stargazing at The Lambing Shed has given you a taste for all things celestial, head to Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium (10 minutes’ drive) for a full-dome film show about the night sky. Wannabe astronauts can see fragments of meteorites and find out cool facts about being in space. In Winchester (15 minutes), check out the spectacular medieval cathedral, which fuses Norman and Gothic elements (it took more than four centuries to build, during which time architectural styles evolved). Winchester City Mill, a National Trust site, is a small corner of nature in the city, and a place where you might spot kingfishers and otters. Attractions at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (45 minutes) include the Mary Rose, a 16th-century vessel that sank in the Solent in 1545 and was raised again only four centuries later, and HMS Victory, Lord Nelson’s flagship during the Battle of Trafalgar.
