‘Fantastic’, ‘amazing, ‘beautiful countryside’, ‘lovely location’, ‘A little slice of tranquillity hidden away in the East-Sussex countryside’… book a break at Hale Farm Campsite to add your own experience of this lovely little place in England’s south east. Both site and surroundings come in for excellent accolades from former guests: the site's green, peaceful and family-friendly setting, and the location on the Weald Way at the head of the Cuckmere Valley. There’s easy access from here to the South Downs National Park, High Weald and the coast to explore by car, bike or on foot… or you could cart the kids to Drusillas Park 15 minutes’ drive away, or to the coast at Brighton and Hastings within 45 minutes. The farm is five minutes’ drive from Chiddingly, within walking distance of a village shop and two recommended pubs. Guests of all ages are most welcome to meet the Hale Farm donkeys, pedigree flocks of Lleyn and Ryeland sheep, pygmy goats, ponies, free-range chickens, geese and ducks, all of whom can be greeted and fed daily. As a working farm, fresh eggs and home-produced sausages and bacon are also available to buy… and yes, campfires are allowed. The site has a spacious accommodation field with no set pitches, alongside well-kept amenities of hot showers and compost toilets. And the final, excellent, little touch? The friendly Hale Farm owner visits pitches every day with logs, kindling and barbecue packs for sale – you might see that as worthy of a glowing review or two too…

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We had such a wonderful weekend at Hale Farm—it was our first-ever camping trip as a family, and honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better experience! The facilities were clean and well-maintained, which made everything feel easy and comfortable. The location itself is absolutely beautiful, with stunning views and plenty of space to relax and explore.

We especially loved wandering around the farm and meeting the animals- such a fun experience for the kids (and us adults too!). One of the highlights was picking up fresh produce each evening; it made our BBQ dinners and breakfasts in the morning feel extra special.

A big bonus? The coffee van each morning-such a treat to start the day with a proper cup of coffee while enjoying the peaceful surroundings. And we also loved the short scenic walk through the fields to Gun Tap Brewery, great chilled atmosphere and even better beer and the pizza truck was fab too.

All in all, Hale Farm made our first camping trip feel like a real adventure, and we’re already talking about coming back. Highly recommend!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Spacious camping field with plenty of room for pitching and room to park a vehicle next to the tent. Our five man family tent was one of the smallest there and there's room to pitch a tent double that size with a separate gazebo for cooking.
Fire pits at each pitch - the owner comes round each day to deliver, with kindling and firelighters if you need them (£8 for the wood, £4 for the firelighters and kindling).
Facilities are spotlessly clean, the owners and staff seems to go in several times a day; in five days I never once found any mess in any of the facilities. Three decent showers - one in a family sized hut and two singles.
Two decent sized washing up huts with two sinks each.
Coffee truck appeared each morning serving espresso from the back of a van.
Good location if you want to go to the coast or up into the High Weald.
Good pub, The Six Bells, in Chiddingly is family friendly and with great food - only a mile from the site.

Disliked We had no complaints at all and a lovely stay for four nights. Only four toilets - two water closets and two compost. With all 27 pitches occupied I could see this being a bit too limited but, to be fair, we didn't experience a problem and we stayed in the middle of the school summer holidays over a weekend. The two WCs are a bit public with large gaps above and below the stalls. There are only two (double) sinks for washing / teeth cleaning one is right outside the WCs and the other by the compost toilets - which had no cold tap. The single showers didn't offer a great deal of privacy in that you can see from outside if they are occupied. There was no mobile signal for us anywhere on the site (we're on O2) - good if you want to get away from it all but might be an issue for some.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Host very friendly and always happy to help.
Facilities were good always immaculately clean. Fire pits were a great idea, as was being able to buy produce from the farm. Pitches a generous size.
Loved being able to look around the farm in the mornings.
Also loved the coffee van visiting in the morning.
Would recommend this campsite.
I’m not rating Wi-Fi as I don’t believe it’s necessary when you camp. We camp to get back to nature and away from screens!

Liked Space, open ness, the owners

Disliked Hot water wasn’t working on one washing up bowl. Could do with water restrictions on taps as saw teenagers running hot tap for ages wasting water

Liked Vrijwel alles. Een van de mooiste campings die we hebben bezocht. Keurig schoon en netjes, fijne rustige sfeer en heel aardige beheerders Scott en Rachel. Het enige minpuntje is het ontbreken van WiFi.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked I went with my family and we all enjoyed our time at the campsite, especially the farm that was the kids favourite part of the visit and the goats were so friendly. The owners are very welcoming and kind, they had fresh eggs for sale which was great. The facilities were clean and well maintained and having fresh drinking water was so convenient. I loved that there was a kitchen area with a sink to make life easier when cleaning dishes. There is plenty of space for your tent and to run around or play. I definitely recommend anyone to go and visit.

Local attractions

What a lot there is to do around here… and that’s just the strolls, hikes and bike rides around the High Weald and the South Downs National Park… This is spectacular wildlife-watching land too, such as at Arlington Reservoir (10 minutes’ drive), for spotting geese, cormorants, grebes and black swans around the waters and from the birdhide. There’s also the hillside around the huge chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington 20 minutes away and spying the inhabitants of the surrounding Cuckmere Valley and nearby Cuckoo Trail. Access the Cuckoo Trail 10 minutes’ drive away at Hailsham for a pedal along its 14-mile route from Heathfield to Eastbourne Park. Other options are Blackberry Farm Park (five minutes), the Raystede Centre for Animal Welfare (10 minutes) and Spring Barn Farm (25 minutes). For arty types, Farley Farm House, home of surrealists Lee Miller and Roland Penrose and visited by the likes of Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, has its gallery within a few minutes’ drive of the farm. Those with a head for history have plenty to browse around hereabouts too, such as Michelham Priory (10 minutes), Herstmonceux and Lewes castles (both 20 minutes), and vintage rides on the Bluebell Railway, accessed half an hour away in Sheffield Park.
