  • Peaceful back-to-basics rural site in the village of Telscombe
  • Just off the South Downs Way and 30 minutes' walk to the beach
  • Organic meat and free-range eggs available to buy from the farm
‘The Downs… too much for one pair of eyes, enough to float a whole population in happiness, if only they would look.’ Thus sighed author (and former local resident) Virginia Woolf in her diary back in 1937. Little has changed around here in the intervening years – if you’d like to look for yourself, settle in at Stud Farm, just outside Telscombe in the South Downs National Park. And what views they are from here – a patchwork of woods and farmland tumbling down to the south coast. There aren’t any marked pitches so just pick your spot and commence the fine activity of staring out to sea. Campfires directly on the ground aren’t permitted but you can hire a firepit or barbecue for warmth and eats. Crank your evening’s gawping up a notch or two with an alfresco feast direct from the farm, which can supply tasty treats for your grill, including home-reared pork and lamb. Marshmallows (not home-reared but still essential firepit fodder) are available for dessert. While you’re there, pick up one of their breakfast hampers so you can get your morning off to a champion start with bangers and free-range eggs. Facilities are kept basic here to maintain the site’s peaceful vibe – you’ll have access to toilets, a couple of showers and drinking water. If you’d like to immerse yourself in water it’s a half-hour stroll down to the nearest beach, where you can launch yourself into the sea for a refreshing dip.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This is just the most perfect site. 360 degree gorgeous views. Fantastic walks in every direction - plus a beautiful walk down to the sea and local pub. Facilities are spotless and amazing to have hot water to wash up with.
The sounds of wildlife and birdwatching are lovely and you can’t hear anything else but skylarks calling! Really nice to have soft clean grass to walk barefoot on across the entire site - most sites have thistles/stones/uncut grass. Lovely friendly hosts and nothing is too much trouble. My second stay here and I will return for definite as it is without doubt the most peaceful calming site I’ve ever stayed at.

Liked: Open site with great view. Nice reception. Great walk to coast on a Bronze Age track.

Disliked: Shame pub on the coast was poor an overpriced.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Fabulous location, plenty of space and fine for camper vans (ours was 5.4m) - our plot was level enough for us but some may need levelling chocks. Note length limit of 6m (which appears as much to do with being able to access through Telscombe village). Staff friendly and helpful. Takes about 30 minutes to walk to sea front by Saltdean. Facilities basic but kept very clean and fit for purpose. Waste disposal point is fine too for our on board dometic cassette loo, Definitely recommend and use again.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We have been here before and it’s a truly lovely camp site. The ablutions are clean, warm and exactly what you expect. They have two wash up places too and a drinking water tap. It’s close enough to places like Saltdean and has some beautiful walks off the campsite grounds as well as sheep and horse in fields around it.

Disliked: Not all the pitches are 100% level although we not bothered by that. Unfortunately due to it being on a hill on the coast it is subject to some winds.

From the manager: Thankyou for your feedback, glad you enjoyed your stay with us.
been on top of the downs we do occasionally get the winds from the open sea,
But we are lucky to have both views of the sea and the downs.

Non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: That view is just fantastic - imagine whati t would cost to get that as a hotel room view! Downside is that it does get a bit windy. Owners are fantastically friewndly and drive up to check regularly - even though there were only a few visitors (mid May mid-week). Facilities work well. direct walks.

Disliked: having to leave and walk on !

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thankyou for your feedback, it is very nice to hear that you enjoyed your stay, the views are fantastic it is not very often that you get a campsite that you can see the downs and sea.

Liked: Situation was perfect. Loved the setting and views and did a fab coastal walk as well as a Downs Walk . Quiet campsite and decent facilities.

Disliked: Only downside was the 11am checkout. Think 12pm would be far better as I needed to rush a little to return from my walk.

What one would expect of a camping site with the owner in attendance to book you in and provide information.

Local attractions

To see more of those views, get your boots on and head out onto the South Downs Way, which passes very close by. Hardy souls can tackle the route’s full 100-mile length, while casual ramblers can choose a shorter section. A popular attraction along the route is the chalk figure of the Long Man of Wilmington, a tall lad indeed at 72 metres. It’s a four-hour walk to see him, or you could drive there in around half an hour. Heading south, a 15-minute walk takes you down to the coast path, where you can continue your stroll to the stretch of shingle at Saltdean. The pier, beach and historic buildings of Brighton are around a half-hour drive away. If you’re feeling particularly active you can walk there in around two hours and then hire a kayak or paddleboard to take to the sea. If you’d like to see the place that inspired Virginia Woolf to wax lyrical about the area, visit her country retreat, Monk’s House, an hour’s walk from the site. There are family-friendly attractions galore around here, too – it'll take you around half an hour to drive to the steam-powered Bluebell Railway, or to Drusillas Park.
