  • Peaceful farm campsite on 180 acres, a mile from Hailsham
  • Herstmonceux Castle 15 minutes’ drive; Eastbourne beach 25 minutes
  • Part of a working organic dairy farm, with a mobile farm shop on site
What a handy location this is for an East Sussex countryside break… Longleys Farm Campsite is part of a 180-acre organic farm, so it’s got all the peaceful atmosphere and rural views you could hope for – and yet it’s just a little over a mile from the centre of Hailsham. That setting means you can easily walk into town for pubs, takeaways and restaurants, or to pick up supplies for meals back on site (picnics, barbecues or campfire cooking… take your pick). The farm is also just next to the 1066 Country walking trail, which you can follow to Pevensey village or across to Herstmonceux Castle. The location is also on the edge of the Pevensey Levels Site of Special Scientific Interest, so the surroundings are teeming with wildlife. With that in mind, the farm uses organic farming methods that are intended to enhance the local ecology – and that certainly seems to be working, as surveys have found more than 45 different native bird species here (including several whose numbers are in serious decline). And of course you’ll also spot the residents down at ground level: this is a working dairy farm where you’ll see the herd walk past the camping field every morning and evening. (Don’t forget that you’ll also need to be aware of various hazards when staying on a working farm.) Facilities here include a modern toilet/shower block, a washing-up area and a mobile shop where you can pick up farm produce.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: (1) Lovely views of the countryside. (2) Good toilet facilities and washing up area. There was hot water. (3) Easy access to the town.

Disliked: (1) We were given no warning that there was a wedding being held on another part of the property. While campers are not allowed to play music and need to remain quiet from 10pm-7am, the wedding party was blasting music from 10pm-2am. This prevented us from sleeping. We would not have booked this campsite if we had known there would be such a disruption. (2) We had no interactions with the owners and the office phone went to voicemail when I called during the day. (3) The road into the campsite is in desperate need of repair. There are huge potholes that made me fear for the wellbeing of the car.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The toilets and showers were quite clean

Disliked: The grass that's been cut, left over on the field, getting up your ankles especially in the morning when it's wet. No toilet paper to 2 out of 3 toilet. Lack of water pressure in the shower especially when both showers available are used in the same time . The smell of cow poop and urine as the pitches are next to the cows sleeping area.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: We really liked the quiet setting. There were only 2 other tents on site when we stayed which suited us. Loved having the Cows, birds, seeing the stars without the noise of others you often get on campsites. Arrival, just turned up and pitched without even needing to speak to anyone. We will be back!

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: This campsite had a very relaxed feel & good, clean toilet/shower block. The site was basic but well maintained & the pile of tyres in the centre of the tent field was a central focus for all the kids staying at the site. We also appreciated the picnic benches - there are only a few & we secured one on arrival. It was useful to have the car parked next to our tent and this was no issue as the site was fairly quiet during our stay.

Disliked: Beyond the showers the site was very basic and I would have liked to have somewhere to refreeze cool blocks (then I could have bought some of their milk!) and somewhere to charge phones.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Great warm showers and clean toilets! Clean fields and large tyres that the kids played in

Disliked: It was very windy and some cover (trees/ hedges/ structures) would’ve been appreciated. One washing up sink was unusable. Both bins were black- people didn’t know how to recycle. Only one rubbish bin for the whole campsite

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Enjoyed location & being part of farm life! We got to see cows & tractors on a daily basis & could purchase diary & meat from Ed who popped round every day. Very chilled out environment with really good clean facilities…..(Toilets & Shower blocks) Jarred was on hand if had any problems & would check in to make sure everything was ok. As expected the ground was not completely flat, it is farmland, so pitch at the top of field where the pitches appeared to be a little more level for a tent.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: The pitches were around the outside of the field and, on the whole, the centre was kept clear so there a lovely feeling of space and therefore tranquility. Jarrod was very friendly and answered our questions about walks in the area. Lovely walks straight from the campsite. Town is a 10 to 15 minute walk from the site across a field. Toilets were very clean. The cows.

Disliked: A small point that possibly only made a difference because the site was full (bank holiday weekend). We were told to pitch centre of the marker and that we had 5 metres either side of it. Some people did not realise this so pitched in a way that made some pitches less usable. A mark painted on the fence to denote the edges of each pitch would be helpful. A bigger problem was the lack of water. The toilets always flushed but the cold water tap in the toilets did not work at all and the showers did not work all the time. A plumber had been called but arrived as we were leaving. Only one washing up sink. Teeth cleaning and hand washing was the 2 very small sinks in the toilets (without cold water). Saying this, we managed and would still return as the atmosphere and clean, fresh air outweighed any niggles.

Local attractions

Your kids might like spending a day at Knockhatch Adventure Park (10 minutes’ drive), where they can meet the animals (from owls to meerkats and wallabies) or just blow off some steam in the various play areas (both outdoors and indoors), including the rather spectacular Dragon Castle Adventure Playground. There’s also a boating lake. Explore the grounds at Herstmonceux Castle (15 minutes), which include the impeccably manicured Elizabethan Garden, the Sundial Garden with its fragrant roses, and the intriguing Shakespeare Garden, featuring plants mentioned in the Bard’s works. There is also an area of woodland where you can escape the heat of a summer’s day. For seaside days, head to Eastbourne (25 minutes) or check out the pretty town of Bexhill-on-Sea (25 minutes), with its independent shops and cafés and the elegant De La Warr Pavilion, an Art Deco building that houses exhibitions, cultural events and concerts by international musical acts.
