  • Peaceful Lancashire farm site with sea views in a National Landscape
  • A 40-minute drive from The World of Beatrix Potter in Windermere
  • Coffee and croissants sold in the morning; Morecambe 20 minutes' drive
Scar Close Camping and Glamping is a peaceful site set in the grounds of a 36-acre old hobby farm in the Arnside and Silverdale Area National Landscape. The surrounding landscape is made up of sloping hills, grassland and woodland, and the coast is within easy reach (20 minutes’ drive) – you can see the waters of Morecambe Bay from the site, which sits at the foot of Warton Crag, a prominent limestone hill and the highest point in Arnside and Silverdale. Guest facilities at this spacious rural spot include serviced toilet cubicles and basic showers. Coffee and croissants are available to buy in the morning, and there is plentiful parking, too (with an alternative area off the grass in the event of wet weather). The owners recommend bringing a bucket or bowl for washing up, as well as a torch – it can get very dark in this part of northern Lancashire at night. (But that translates into excellent stargazing, so no one is complaining…) Geared towards families, laidback Scar Close also welcomes well-behaved pets (who should be on leads and carefully supervised at all times). While you can’t build an open fire, a ready-made traditional stone firepit is available for evening cook-outs, and barbecues are welcome as long as they’re not placed directly on the ground or picnic benches. The small village of Warton is about a mile down the road and has a brewery, pub and post office.

Bell tent (basic)

Liked The owners are really nice and very helpful. They had a chat with us about the horses and other animals when we were having a walk about the site.
The shower block is one of the nicest I have ever seen on a campsite and definitely the nicest I've seen on a privately run site such as this.
The price of £60 to stay the night in a pre erected bell tent was a great price.
100% would recommend and have already done so to friends and family.
Thanks for a great stay.

Liked Perfect stay with our two young children. Very family friendly and very secure with the security gate on entrance. Toliet and shower facilities were immaculate.
Scarbucks was a lovely way to start the morning with coffee, bacon butties and much more. We can't recommend this campsite enough and can't wait to come back with the family

Disliked Nothing

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The hosts are incredibly friendly and the campsite is excellently presented. The toilets and showers are great and the ability to get fresh coffee and snacks first thing in the morning is a bonus, especially if it’s pack up day.

The hosts were always on hand to answer our questions and gave us great advice on places to visit while we were in the area.

Disliked Nothing, just be aware the owners have two friendly labradors so don’t be surprised if they come and say hi.

Bell tent (basic)

Liked The camping field was perfect for children - a huge expanse of lush short grass, with woods and rocks close by, endless space for them to roam in safely. Great views over Morecambe Bay from the field. The bell tents were perfect - we were camping for one night with three other families, so having the four bell tents all together was great and avoided us having to pitch tents for one night. The (Scarbucks) breakfast van was a welcome surprise - great to be able to get a fresh bacon sandwich and hot drink, and all very reasonably priced. The shower/toilet block was one of the best we've seen and very clean.

Local attractions

In addition to elegant interiors and expansive parkland, Leighton Hall Estate (10 minutes’ drive) runs a lively programme of events, which includes falconry displays, plant fairs and craft markets. A little further up the road, the wetlands of RSPB Leighton Moss are home to egrets, harriers and red deer. Take a stroll along the wide promenade that hugs the bay at Morecambe (25 minutes), stopping for a selfie next to the statue of British comedian Eric Morecambe. Close to the seafront, there are also a bowling alley, a trampoline park and a skatepark, so the kids should have plenty to keep them occupied while you take a tour of the Morecambe Winter Gardens theatre (Easter–October). On the banks of Lake Windermere, the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (40 minutes) recreates the fictional universe of beloved characters like Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddle-Duck. After that, you can cross the lake and visit National Trust - Hill Top (50 minutes), the cottage where the children’s author lived and worked.
