  • Luxury lakeside glamping site eight miles from the Peak District
  • Just outside Newhey village; Ellenroad Steam Mill 20 minutes’ walk
  • Firepit and hot tub at each pod; fishing available on site
Your very own pod with a private terrace, laid out with a bubbling hot tub and a firepit-grill? One that's within a 10-minute walk of trams to Manchester and village bars and restaurants? Might as well consider your bags packed, especially when you hear that Calmwater Hideaway is only eight miles from the edge of the Peak District to boot. This luxury lakeside glamping site is tucked conveniently behind the heritage site of Ellenroad Steam Mill (the museum is just a 20-minute walk away for a closer look), 10 minutes’ walk from Newhey village centre. It’s firmly a countryside location here on the Ellenroad Estate, with sheep and cows grazing in the immediate surroundings and a gorgeous lake on site. However, you still have the convenience of being within striking distance of cities. Junction 21 on the M62 is just a mile away, connecting you to Manchester and Leeds in 45 minutes. Trams run from Newhey to Manchester city centre, taking around 40–50 minutes – handy if you don’t fancy navigating traffic and parking. Staying at Calmwater Hideaway might feel like being at a boutique hotel, with plush bedding, modern ensuite bathrooms and kitchens at each pod. The outdoor terrace is just the thing for slow mornings with a coffee, or maybe a glass of wine under the stars, should they be so kind as to appear. You’re welcome to go fishing at the on-site lake, and for an additional fee it's possible to bring your dog along on the break. Secure private parking and electric gated access are some other nice touches on site.

Local attractions

No need to limit yourself to just the one on-site lake. Hollingworth Lake (20 minutes’ drive) is surrounded by gentle walking trails and woodlands. Once a tourist destination for Victorian society, it’s now a place where paddleboarding and lakeside restaurants take centre stage. A little further away is Piethorne Reservoir (half an hour), with its gorgeous walking trails, and Dovestone Reservoir (half an hour), with a 2.5-mile circular walk and sailing club. For a day in the city, Manchester (45 minutes) is absolutely jam-packed with things to do, whether it’s a pitstop tour of the museums and galleries or café-hopping through Deansgate, the Northern Quarter and Spinningfields. Leeds (45 minutes) has a lively atmosphere too, with historic arcades, restaurants, bars and Victorian architecture. To do Leeds without a car, head to Manchester first, and then catch the train up there. If you’ve got any time left over, a peaceful walk at the Healey Dell Nature Reserve (25 minutes) might appeal, passing its tall railway viaduct, woodland and waterfalls. You could also make a trip to Blackpool (an hour and 10 minutes).
