  • On a working farm between the Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales
  • Close to the Pennine Way; 20 minutes' drive to Skipton
  • Three pubs within walking distance; easy access from the M65
Planning a walk or few as part of your break? Maybe in the Yorkshire Dales or the Forest of Bowland… or on the Pennine Way… and not forgetting other top spots like Pendle Hill and Gisburn Forest… If you reckon that sounds like a pretty enticing collection of places to explore, the place to stay is Shay Gate Farm, just outside Laneshawbridge on the border between Lancashire and Yorkshire. This well-placed spot is about half an hour’s drive from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland, five minutes from the Pennine Way and within easy reach of several other excellent walking/biking areas. Getting in, out and all around should be pretty easy too – Colne is about two and a half miles away, and the M65 about four miles. The setup on site is a family-friendly one, with lots of space for the kids to run about and burn off energy. Facilities include toilets, showers, a washing-up area and a communal fridge, and you’re allowed to bring along a barbecue to cook your meals if you like (it’s a 20-minute drive to Skipton’s market to stock up on local produce for the grill). There are, however, three country pubs within walking distance if you’d rather someone else cooked you a meal.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Friendly, helpful and well run.
Toilets well looked after and nice hot showers
Pubs in walking distance - 20mins
Nice views

Disliked Whole site on a slope (not particularly bad but a little tricky with motorbike and a little awkward with sleeping in a tent)
Would be nice to have a Shelf in showers to put you shampoo etc.. on

Lovely site, will definitely return

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked The views were lovely, nice friendly site on a working farm, the cows were really friendly! Clean toilets and showers, nice welcome at the gate and just told to pick any pitch which was perfect as we could choose what suited us best away.
Tip - just take your towel and products if using the showers and come back to your tent if possible to get dressed, there isn’t really anywhere to hang anything and not much room to then get changed afterwards, wasn’t a problem for me but thought worth a mention! The showers were lovely and hot and clean!

Disliked One particular family were really loud very late and no one seemed to come round and check the site later on in the evening.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely 2 day break on a spacious site with a beautiful view over the hills with pendle hill in the distance. Not very busy and although basic, amenities are all that you need, flushing toilet, shower, washing up and fridge. Fire pits to hire for a relaxing evening with the back drop of bird song. Had a great time. Good walks from the site with local pub not a mile away. Site manager responsive to queries.

Disliked The site is on a side of a hill, but flat ground can be found and the slope is bare able for a night or 2.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Views, toilet, running water. Local pub, once I got there.

Disliked A pretty bleak and depressing place to arrive as a solo bikepacker. It was windy and clearly had been raining and the only shelter was either the hedge right next to the busy road or earth banks in the middle of the field which were surrounded by waterlogged ground. Most of the campsite was waterlogged, surprising given all of it was on a slope. No hot water in any of the taps so I didnt want to try the showers in case of the same problem. The showers in the horse boxes are a bit quirky, maybe fun in the summer but when its not hot, very uninviting. 2 (or 3?) picnic benches for the whole site grouped together by the loos. Signage down the hill to the pub was pretty bad, one sign was lying on the ground, so I struggled to find the right way. Most of the walk there was through very waterlogged fields. All in all not sure what I paid £20 for.

Decent and clean all I needed was there…

Local attractions

Where to take your walking boots first? Local strolls might take you out onto the Pendle Way (which you can access via a network of footpaths leading from the farm), to pick up the Pennine Way (five minutes’ drive) or to take in different rural views from the ‘Atom’ artwork in Wycoller Country Park (10 minutes). Not worn your legs out yet? Great - there’s plenty more to explore. Perhaps a climb of mystical Pendle Hill, a woodland walk in the Forest of Bowland or an outing to the Yorkshire Dales National Park? All are about half an hour away by car. Should you reach a point at which you need a sit down, a ride on the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway (25 minutes’ drive) is a good option, as it means you’ll still be able to survey the scenery at a more leisurely pace. A stroll around Skipton (20 minutes) might also be on the cards, taking in the priory and castle as you go.
