Come on over to Cumbria – and, more specifically, to Top Field in the excellent Eden valley – for a stay at a site with snazzy views of the Lake District’s northern reaches. Your base here is a lush green field surrounded by open countryside and dotted with hedgerows and trees here and there for secluded R&R sessions after hiking around the fells and tarns in the national park. In keeping with the site’s fuss-free name, Top Field has no facilities except for a water tap – its focus is on letting guests have self-sufficient and off-grid hols close to epic walking and bike riding trails. Paths that are particularly nifty to access include the 140-mile Coast-to-Coast cycle route stretching from England’s east to its west. If you’re not sold on spending days sitting on the saddle, Lake Ullswater is 30 minutes’ drive away, the second-biggest body of water in the park and a stellar spot for watersports or scenery-gazing trips on the famed steamer ferries. Penrith, meanwhile, is the regional centre for the eastern Lake District; the area’s urban hub has a shopping centre (10 minutes) combining traditional shops with fancy arcades for loading up on souvenirs as well as all your essentials.

Local attractions

The Lake District’s more synonymous with poetry than paintings, but it’s definitely worth making a beeline for Beckstones Art Gallery (15 minutes’ drive) to see top-notch works by UK creatives. Visit swoon-worthy historical buildings like the ruined medieval Penrith Castle and the 13th-century Brougham Castle (both 20 minutes) as well and you might just be inspired to bust out the sketchpad and pencils yourself… Lakeland has plenty of other properly pretty old buildings with gorgeous gardens to check out too: think the National Trust’s Acorn Bank (30 minutes) with its sizeable herb collection and old-school fruit orchard, and Dalemain Mansion’s formal gardens edging wilder woodlands (20 minutes). If the tiddlers are in desperate need of a dose of sugar after all the leg stretching, the delectable confections at the Abbott Lodge Jersey Ice Cream (25 minutes) should see them right. Let small humans rest after roams with a ride on one of the Ullswater steamers (30 minutes), which pass by the tallest mountains in Lakeland – including the particularly hefty Helvellyn – on a scenic eight-mile route. Gliding along the water in springtime? Turning to the western side gets you views of the daffodils that inspired Wordsworth's famed poem.
