Ings Kippers Campsite and Shepherd's Hut: One of the bigger hillside terrace pitches with a small tent on it

General

  • Small, basic adults-only site two miles from Windermere
  • Well placed for cycle paths and public transport; pub five mins' walk
  • Firepit provided for each pitch; wood available to buy on site

Backpacking the Dales Way? Stopping off en route to Scotland? Exploring as many of the Lake District’s fells and lakes as you can? Whatever your reason for heading to Cumbria, you can expect a warm welcome from the owners at Ings Kippers Campsite.

This is a small adults-only basic site with a handful of pitches in the grounds of a private house, so you won’t find any large groups, families or dogs running about here. It’s a peaceful place that’s all geared up for backpackers, cyclists, bike-packers, solo campers and couples in search of space to relax; after 10pm all should be pretty quiet (other than perhaps the crackle of the logs in the firepit or the gentle swish of a car passing in the distance…)

Cars are kept away from the pitches too, so you’ll start your stay by walking your gear a short distance along a grassy path between the Christmas trees on the steep Lakeland hillside to find your choice of level grass pitch. Compact tents (4-person maximum), light gear and strong tent pegs are the key items to pack here for the best experience.

Each one has a firepit (with wood available to buy on site) and a great view out over the local fells, and you're welcome to light off-ground barbecues for an alfresco dinner. (Although you may like to note the award-wining pub and microbrewery five minutes’ walk away…) Free phone charging and ice-pack freezing are available at the house, and guests also have access to clean toilets and hot showers.

Those hot showers will certainly be welcome after long days of adventures: wild swimming, paddleboarding and kayaking are all on the menu nearby, and there are lots of safe bike paths in the surrounding areas. Windermere is only two miles away from Ings Kippers, and lots of other top Lake District spots are within easy reach too – Ambleside, Coniston and Great Langdale among them. The main road is only about 100 metres from the site, and regular public transport services run nearby for sustainable travels.

Please note

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

If reception is closed on arrival: please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (excluding couples) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Lovely small site in the hills, not too far from the town of Windermere, with a shop, petrol station and pub just across the road. Everything you need on site, including a cool little firepit, and they even sell firewood in case you forget it or your little bbq runs out as did for us. Also have a shower/toilet cubicle with hot running water, although this has to be funded with 20p coins in a bid to save water (there's a note in there explaining it all), but also a small boxed off outdoor shower that's free. Pitches are slightly up hill so do have to put the legwork in a little, but they're all on level ground with plenty of room for an average sized tent, and also scattered around a little on the hill so you're not always right next door to someone, making for some good privacy and uninterrupted views of the hills around. Staff very friendly and helpful, with an informative welcome upon arrival. Also believe its adults only, so no noisy kids running around when you're trying to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

    Disliked:

Not able to park by pitch which means carrying stuff from car up the hill to pitch, but this can't be helped obviously.

This was such a lovely site to stay at. The facilities were always clean and there were enough toilets/showers to never have to wait to use them. The outdoor shower in particular was great- free to use and hot straight away! The pitches were nicely spaced so you had some privacy, and they all came with a fire pit and picnic table. The owner was really friendly and met us on arrival to explain everything, but left us to it after that. He was always available at the house to buy logs or charge our phones. We stayed on the pitch at the top right and the view was incredible and so spacious- would recommend going for that one if it is free! Also if you are backpacking/don't have a car, the bus stop is a few minutes down the road and you can get to the rest of the Lakes from there. Would definitely stay here again!

Thanks for your great review and we hope to see you again !

Yes, the top right pitch is lovely if you don't mind earning the view by walking to the top of the hill. As you say, there are good bus services right outside on the A591 and we're on multiple routes which go through Kendal and into the Lakes via Windermere, Ambleside etc. There is even a route to Great Langdale which is great for hillwalkers.

Nothing! It is a bit basic, but we knew that before we came so no surprises there. There is a functioning and clean toilet and shower, and the owner is extremely friendly to help you with anything you need.

It sounds like you enjoyed the high level route to Sykeside campsite over Yoke, Ill Bell, Frostwick, Thornthwaite Crag etc - I should try that myself one day.

Perfect location for visiting family in Kendal and so close to the Lakes.
Host very welcoming and friendly. He let us know which pitches were empty so this made it easier for us. Very well organised clean campsite and lots of useful signs. Plenty of car parking spaces too.
Yes the pitches are up a hill but we had packed light so this wasn't an issue for us.
Yes you can hear the road however I found this quite soothing and it definitely didn't affect our sleep.
We had read all the previous reviews and description of site so we knew what to expect.
Loved the shower. Plenty of room for getting changed and shower really clean and water was hot. I didn't use the solar shower so can't comment on that.
Terraced pitches were super flat and a good size for a small campsite. We also thought there was plenty of room between us and the next pitch (although this was empty so we had no immediate neighbours). I liked the fact that there was a table separating the 2 pitches so it was nice to have an individual pitch. The bucket of water on each site was a nice addition (although we didn't use this or the fire pit)
Absolutely loved this site and will definitely stay again. Our one night away was not long enough.

Local attractions

You can see the Old Man of Coniston from the pitches on a clear day… and if that whets your appetite for scenic outdoor pursuits, you’ve come to the right place. Wainwright baggers can easily get to Kentmere Horseshoe and the other Far Eastern Fells from Ings Kippers, and it’s an easy two-mile journey to the shores of Windermere for wild swims, watersports or waterside walks (or maybe a leisurely lake cruise if you need a little rest…)

This area is well-known for its links with Beatrix Potter too – if you’d like to find out more about the author behind the classic children’s books, take a trip to The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (10 minutes’ drive), and then visit her former home at Hill Top (half an hour).

It’s worth stopping by in Kendal (15 minutes) too – it’s home to a castle, a lively arts scene and lots of shops and places to eat. For a real taste of the local area, head to Staveley (five minutes) and a tour of the Hawkshead Brewery (preceded by a walk up Reston Scar if you feel the need to earn that pint…)
