  • Quiet and relaxing family-run site on the edge of Penrith
  • Open views to the Lakeland fells; big skies and spectacular sunsets
  • Five miles from Ullswater and easy access to main travel routes
Here's a cunning plan for those who are Lake District-bound and want to stay on a small and excellently-equipped new site with spectacular views… making a cosy Cumbrian den at Foxfield Touring Park. Foxfield is tucked away on the edge of Penrith, in a wildlife haven surrounded by open countryside. Its far-reaching views stretching towards the Lakeland fells to the west, the Pennine escarpment to the east and the Howgill fells to the south make it a clever pick if you want a place deep in Cumbrian countryside – but within easy reach of the many watery and other sights and activities around the Lakes. All is properly modern here, like the amenities block labelled 'the best wash block we have ever seen', by one gratified former guest, and with spacious showers, hairdryer, shaver points and underfloor heating from the site biomass, as well as a separate wetroom for guests with mobility issues. Foxfield also has an indoor chemical disposal point with handwashing facilities and a tap to wash cassettes out. (Only organic toilet fluid to be used in toilet cassettes, please, as the site uses a treatment plant.) The town of Carleton is half a mile away, with a farm shop on a working farm, a pub serving good food and a range of ales, and a restaurant. Nearby Penrith is well equipped with supermarkets, speciality and individual shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs, a big leisure centre and a cinema.

Local attractions

The Lake District, the most visited national park in the country, is easily reached from Foxfield: the spectacular scenery and steamboat rides of Ullswater are five miles away; Windermere, Ambleside and Keswick are within a short drive, and active types will have easy access to walks, fell climbs, cycling and horse riding. And watersports: the Lake District has 53 lakes, tarns and several waters. For gentler days, visit Dalemain House, the gardens of Askham Hall and Lowther Castle, Acorn Bank Garden & Watermill, and the activities and events of the Rheged Centre, with six-storey cinema screen, shops, cafés and indoor and outdoor play areas. Also highly recommended by the Foxfield Touring Park team is the Eden Valley, the stretch of green countryside lying between the Pennines to the east, Lake District to the west, Howgills to the south and the Scottish borders to the north. Amble around its sandstone villages, some dating back to Viking times, and hike between the Eden benchmarks, ten sculptures/seats set among the spectacular scenery. Take a drive from Penrith to Alston (voted one of the most scenic drives in the country), with a stop at Hartside to take in the view across to the Solway Firth and Scotland. Then continue on up to Alston, one of England's highest market towns and a place so oldly handsome it's been used as a film location for Jane Eyre and Oliver Twist.
