  • Family-run site a mile from the centre of Kirkby Stephen
  • Playground, free wifi, bar and well-appointed washrooms
  • On the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park
One could base oneself at Pennine View Caravan Park for months on end to investigate the hundreds of miles' worth of spectacular paths in the area: the site is on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, a short drive from both the Lake District National Park and the North Pennines. Walks and cycle routes catering for all tastes from gentle country strolls to challenging mountain bike trails are all around here, or you could tackle lush River Eden trout fishing, horse riding or paragliding close by, or mooch around the mighty natural attractions in the area like High Force Waterfall, or pick up local produce in Cumbrian market towns, or potter around the region's many old houses and castles… Family-run Pennine View is well placed for the lot from its Cumbrian setting, in countryside a mile from the market town of Kirkby Stephen. It's across the road from the volunteer-run heritage Stainmore Railway Company, where there are several locomotives and rolling stock to see. The caravan park itself is in fact part of a historic railway goods yard – something you'll no doubt note when you stop by at its Engine Shed bar for drinks and takeaway food (on selected nights) in a characterful and welcoming spot. Facilities on site include a playground, free wifi, a covered washing-up area, a launderette with washing machine and tumble dryer, and amenity blocks with baby bath, disabled facilities and free hot showers – just the ticket after a satisfactory day striding o'er the local moors…

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (six person)

Liked: Location: In walking distance of Kirkby Stephen and lots of walking routes. There's a field and access to the river just off the site too which is great for a quick dog walk or a little stroll with the kids.

Facilities:
Probably the best shower blocks we've used on a campsite! The main blocks have been refurbished and theres also a family shower room which was great when travelling with a little one! The small blocks on the grass pitches aren't as new but the water was always hot and they were really clean.

The camping kitchen is a great idea- nice to be able to wash the dishes/cook/eat inside if needed and handy for anyone backpacking with a small tent.

Play area is nice to have on site too!

The Engine Room is a lovely little bar and has different food vendors there each night which is great if you've had a long day and want an easy tea! We had food on our first night from the Flatbread Kitchen- felt it looked really nice but was pricey for the quality (£27 for a burger, chicken flatbread and chips).

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch (six person)

Liked: The site is amazing
When it's full it still seems empty as you have so much space with your pitch size
The shower block is extremely clean and very well maintained as well as the toilets and smells very nice and clean
There is a pub on site which is also very nice, it's an old coach house which is very open and airy. The beer and food is very reasonably priced.
The staff are so very helpful and extremely lovely people. Very knowledgeable about there surroundings.
Very animal friendly

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Beautiful site area of attraction great railway great

Disliked: Site was well we should not of been on pitch 49 . Maybe family with kids as we were surrounded no privacy what so ever no peace and quiet until at least 1030 . Children running under our awning most of evening also on bikes no respect what so ever as parent on tables drinking and letting kids run wild . What ashame was highly recommended and was so looking forward to the site was beautiful we stayed down village until 10 pm second night as work hard all week and only wanted peace and quiet luckily found lovely little bar that was ok but would have just liked to sit outside our van have dinner and relax on summers evening so sorry would stay again just not near the bar .

Electric grass and gravel touring pitch

Liked: Stayed here for 3 nights, excellent location with a great walk at the back of the site into Kirby Stephen along the old railway track and back along the river approx 3 miles round trip. Highly recommend Sandys the ice cream was gorgeous and very good value the owner was lovely too.
Very clean showers and toilets site was immediately kept. The Engine room with bar and street food restaurant where they have a different type of food each night. There was a pizza eve a burger and flat bread eve whilst we were there very reasonable in price too.
Loved this site its been one of our favourites over the past 4 years

Disliked: Not really an issue for us as we asked to move from pitch 41 which is opposite the engine room on the far side of the park near to the road there were tall trees behind the site with a lot of crows nesting and were quite loud. We were moved with no issue at all and only mention it to make anyone that is a light sleeper aware as this may cause an issue for you but the staff were brilliant

Local attractions

Walking routes start from the site and crisscross all over the nearby Yorkshire Dales National Park, around local town Kirkby Stephen, up the Howgill Fells and through the countryside of the Eden Valley. To see it all from way up high, paragliding is available within half a mile of Pennine View. The nearby River Eden has some spectacular fishing, all accessible a mile from the site. Wild brown trout are the main haul on the stretch of river managed by the Kirkby Stephen & District Angling Association, whose members are happy to take visitors out along the water (remember you'll need a fishing permit). Day tickets are available, with free fishing for under-18s. Horse riding can be had four miles away, and the mountain bike trails in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Beauty within five. The waters, boating and miles more walks of the Lake District National Park are 10 miles away. If you want to see how folk have lived in the area throughout the centuries, the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes is a good place to start; happily, the town is home to the Wensleydale Creamery too.
