General

  • Scenic site with basic facilities on the edge of the Lake District
  • Five minutes' drive to Broughton-in-Furness; Coniston Water 15 minutes
  • Spectacular west-facing views; a mile from the river Lickle and a pub

Bedding down at Upper Hoawthwaite is a straightforward affair – simply turn up at this small-scale site and pick whichever pitch you most like the look of. Once you've unpacked, feel free to light up a barbecue, sit back and take in those spectacular hillside views…

The facilities here are on the low-key end of the spectrum – portaloos (which are thoroughly cleaned daily) and drinking water (brought onto site in a large tank) pretty much cover it. It's true that staying in such a remote spot involves a few small trade-offs, but once here you may well be inclined to think that the ample space and far-reaching views over the Lake District more than make up for the lack of electricity.

From Upper Hoawthwaite it's a cinch to get out to some of the top bits of the national park, like Coniston Water (15 minutes' drive), the Old Man of Coniston (25 minutes) and Hawkshead (30 minutes). Fancy a change of scenery? The coast is also an easy 20-minute drive away.

The site is a mile away from Broughton Mills, where there's a family-friendly local pub and relaxing walk along the river Lickle. Broughton-in-Furness (five minutes' drive) has more pubs, a tourist information centre and a handful of independent cafés.

Pitchup sent the wrong address so we ended up at the owner's house on the other side of the valley. The lady that greeted us was very friendly and redirected us. It wasn't difficult to find.

Expensive for a site with no showers.

The site is right on top of the valley and there is absolutely no shelter from the wind, which just happened to be galeforce on the night we stayed!

From the manager...

The site is exactly as described and you the toilets all had hand sanitisers in when we cleaned them, you had our contact number why didnt you simply tell us the had sanitiser had run out or use the 2500 litre water tank to wash your hands like everyone else ?

It's peaceful and the views are stunning, the pictures when booking just don't do it justice at all. It's a great location considering we travelled 7 hours from Essex, we could easily reach Coniston water, Windermere and Ambleside for the waterfalls...

Considering we only stayed 2 nights, I can't wait to go back and explore a little bit more for a little longer!

The campsite was a little lively in the evening with people enjoying music and we stayed up to play a few card games but it wasn't intrusive and everyone who was on the site at the time was respectful and didn't keep us up!

I highly recommend this site if you're looking to just pitch up and get out and explore. There aren't shower facilities but really for a short stay, we didn't need them, the toilets were a bit full when we got there but they cleaned them out as we were leaving, a portaloo is just a portaloo though so I mean, I can't complain at all.

All in all, I can't wait to go back next year!

Amazing location in terms of views (surrounded by hills and could see to the sea) and we were treated to a cracking sunset followed by star gazing. The field has plenty of space and organisation / communication was good with the owner, who was friendly and stopped by to say hello and check everything was ok.

    Disliked:

A group of friends managed to get through the booking system (which is supposed to be for families and couples only) and decided to play crap dance music via their car and stay up talking loudly until 4am, which meant I got little sleep. Shame really because otherwise staying here was a real pleasure. £30 was also a little steep for one tent for one night.

Nice secluded farm, with plenty of grass. Portable loos was very clean.

The staff was very friendly and helped tow vehicles onto he site as it had rained quite heavy making the entrance slushy and impossible to get in. Fixed straight away with stones and extra sheeting.

Will visit again, pub just around the corner and fun activities within a 15 - 20 min drive.

    Disliked:
