  • Small and scenic caravan site on Appleby Golf Club in Cumbria
  • A 15-minute drive to the North Pennines; 25 minutes to Lake District
  • On a moorland golf course; pubs and shops five minutes’ drive away
A small and simple site with one very big USP, Brackenber Moor Caravan Site is bang in the middle of Appleby Golf Club, just off the A66. This moorland course was designed by Open Champion Willie Fernie in 1903, and it offers challenges for all levels of player – but please note that the site is not managed by the golf club, so you’ll need to book separately if you want to play a round. Taking a break at Brackenber is as close to wild camping as you can get in a caravan; the minimal on-site facilities include mains water and a chemical toilet disposal facility but no toilets or showers. But hey, chances are you’ll either be or out and about exploring the area or teeing off on that golf course. Dogs are welcome too, but due to the particular nature of the site, with flocks of free-roaming sheep around, they'll need to be kept on leads at all times. Sitting on the Eden river, Appleby-in-Westmorland is a great place to visit any time of year, with a medieval castle and Georgian-era architecture. A nose around will turn up plenty of pubs and restaurants if you fancy a change of scenery, or handy shops for picking up supplies if you’re going down the self-catering route.

Liked: Last minute booking and we absolutely loved it. It’s totally remote except it’s bang in the middle of a golf course. We were not in any danger of being hit by golf balls as we were far enough away from golfers stray balls.
On site there is simply en Elsan point and a fresh water point; that’s it. It’s in the middle of beautiful landscape and near to a small lake. Sheep and other wildlife was all around us.
We had two small dogs and took them on numerous dog walks. Nearby is Appleby golf club of which you can take dogs in, have breakfast/lunch and a beer; you don’t need to be a member. They made us feel so welcome.
Would we return? Of course would absolutely. The UK needs more like these kind of sites.

Disliked: Let me think.🤔 absolutely nothing

Liked: Lovely rural location, that was perfect for a stop over on the way back from Scotland as not far from the main road either. Quiet, only 2 other vans there.

Liked: It's like the good old wild camping and this is why we liked it. We stayed 6 nights (the weather was beautiful), enjoyed beautiful sunsets, total darkness at night, tranquility.

Liked: Peace and quiet and stunning views. Drinking water, chemical point and bin on site. Just as described. Loads of room. Noise from tank range up the road day and night but not late....didn't bother us though. Only three vans including ours.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Very remote. Arrived late as we were using this as a stop off on route to Scotland. Not far from the main road but a world away.

Disliked: There is nothing to dislike, as there is nothing there. There's a tap we found but that's the extent of the services. You need to be self sufficient. It was dry so access was not an issue.
