  • Community-owned pub site a 10-minute walk from Mawbray Banks, Cumbria
  • Lake District National Park a half-hour drive; Carlisle 45 minutes
  • Beer garden with expansive views; toilet block and showers
Fancy adding a little feel-good factor to your camping holiday? By staying at The Lowther Arms, you’ll lend your support to a deserving project, for this traditional country pub in the heart of Mawbray village, in Cumbria, was rescued from closure by the local community, and any income generated by the site is invested back into the pub and its facilities. You too can make like the locals, settling down in a cosy corner for a pint and a meal (if you are planning an evening meal, you'll need to book well in advance as they are full most evenings), or for a morning coffee and a quiet spell during which to plan the day’s activities. The site sits within the Solway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and there is plenty to do in the vicinity, starting (predictably enough) with the pretty spectacular coastline. The sandy dunes of Mawbray Banks (10 minutes’ walk) are home to protected species like the natterjack toad, plus birds like oystercatchers and curlews. As you walk along this vast stretch, you can also take in views of Scotland across the Solway Firth. Or you can head to Allonby (five minutes’ drive), a shingle beach popular with windsurfers. Hiking trails for all abilities, including a challenging scramble up Scafell Pike (England’s highest mountain), await at Lake District National Park, which is less than half an hour’s drive away – indeed, on a clear day you can admire its hills from the beer garden. Well-behaved dogs are welcome at the site, and campfires are allowed. In addition to the pub toilets, guests also have access to a toilet block and showers.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Peace and quiet, clean and sheltered. Pub food very good. Hosts very friendly and helpful.
No shops in the village so make sure you are supplied, otherwise towns and shops not far away in a vehicle

Disliked Not enough toilets and showers for 5 pitches full of people. Ok if you don’t mind taking your turn etc. luckily, on the Sunday night everyone else left, so we had the facilities to ourselves

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked It was a small and cozy site with a great play park and fantastic bar.

The staff were amazing.

Disliked Not really a dislike for me but the site is very remote, nothing but the pub (that we found) within walking distance but this was exactly what we were after.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked The pitch was easy to use and had an electric hook up. The toilet and shower room were easy to use and clean. The pub seemed nice however was closed when we got there due to being bank holiday. It was close to the beach and the local area was beautiful. It was perfect for our little stay.

Disliked Only one shower and two toilets I queued most times I needed to go. The washing up was the same sink as the toilet so you would occupy it when washing up so people couldn't use it.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Nice clean small site, very friendly owners, pub on site and the food was really good, shower and toilet facilities which were regularly cleaned and tidy. We would definitely use this site again if we’re ever up that way.

Disliked Nothing really although we would say The Shower room and toilet doors could definitely use an engaged and vacant sign to stop people rattling the door or trying the key while you are in the shower.

Electric optional grass pitch

Liked Lovely flat field, each pitch with electric hook up and water supply. Only half of the pitches at most are allocated at any time so it never feels overcrowded. One shower with toilet and a separate toilet only. Toilet emptying facilities but nowhere obvious for emptying grey water. Short walk through the very quiet and pretty village to the beach or nature reserve, great for the dogs. The site and the pub are both very dog friendly too although they should be kept on leads, sensible anyway! Good food being served in the pub although we didn't partake as out most of each day. Highly recommended

Disliked Somewhere to empty grey water would have been useful and the wifi wasn't great but that's really all

Local attractions

Senhouse Roman Museum (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to learn more about the Roman history of this area. The collection of artefacts on display here includes votive slabs, military altars and pottery unearthed at a nearby Roman fort said to date from the first century AD. If you have an animal lover in your party, why not make them happy with a trip to Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour)? In addition to displays starring the resident birds of prey, you can get up close and personal to lemurs and meerkats, or stroll with an alpaca. All these experiences are accompanied by spectacular, far-reaching views of Bassenthwaite Lake. The border city of Carlisle (45 minutes) is worth a visit for its 11th-century castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held captive in the 1500s, and its medieval cathedral, with an elegant Flemish altarpiece. You can also go for a pleasant stroll through Bitts Park or on Hadrian's Wall Path, along the River Eden.
