  • Family-friendly camping 15 minutes’ drive from Crewe in rural Cheshire
  • Chester Zoo and Blue Planet Aquarium both 50 minutes’ drive
  • Dog-walking area; pubs within 10 minutes’ drive
Neat as a new pin, spacious, level and divided by young saplings. That’ll be the hardstanding and grass pitches at Oakwood Campsite, a family-friendly spot bordering farmland and set 10 minutes’ drive from the conservation village of Church Minshull in rural Cheshire. All the requisites for a relaxed break with family and friends are on hand at this well-maintained site: a modern shower block with baby-changing amenities and a wet room for the mobility impaired, pot washing, water stations, chemical waste disposal, recycling bins and charging points. You may want to eat breakfast and lunch at Minshull’s Garden Centre (10 minutes’ walk), and if you fancy dining out in the evening, there are several pubs within 10 minutes’ drive, as well as takeaways and fast-food outlets in Crewe (15 minutes’ drive). Your canine companions are welcome, and there’s a dedicated dog-walking area on site – please keep them on leads around the pitches. You can also exercise them (and yourselves of course) on longer expeditions down the Shropshire Union Canal towpath.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Perfectly level pitches with acres of space. Plenty of fresh water on site, and the flashiest loos & showers I've ever seen on a site! When quiet (only 1 other pitch occupied, as mid week) the wildlife was a bonus - Hare on the camping field & Great Spotted Woodpecker in the surrounding trees. View across to the Welsh hills when clear enough.

Electric optional hardstanding touring pitch

Liked The facilities were impressive - gate security, perfectly level pitch, provision of fresh water around the site, modern toilet & shower block. Also that the inter-pitch screening was by the recent planting of beech hedges rather than conifers.

Disliked Some customers seemed not to have been toilet-trained and had left the loos in an unhygienic state. To be fair, 5 loos, 5 showers (both sexes) between so many users are perhaps too few.
Also 1 party felt it necessary to share their taste in music with the rest of the site - fortunately they shut it off at a reasonable time.
Unfortunately there was no clear division between waste and recycling bins.

From the manager: Thank you for your kind comments.
Regarding your negative ones - Unfortunately, I had a few unwelcome guests the period you were staying, and their habits and complete lack of respect made life difficult. I can only apologise and hope it doesn't put you off in the future.

Non-electric grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good showers and toilet blocks

Disliked Had quite a strong smell of cow manure, also got a bit of a telling off when asked if it’s okay to use bbq when the lady done her walk around seems quite strict. Stating she doesn’t agree with them things and don’t be putting it in my bin ‘I mean it’. She did allow us to cook on the road though which was kind 😂. Just didn’t feel like a nice space to be won’t be returning.

From the manager: Hello Darren,
Thank you for your comments.
To address your complaints if I may:
The site is in a agricultural area and therefore if a farmer is spreading manure in the area there will be a smell associated with it for a day or two afterwards.
Regarding the BBQ, it does state very clearly on the Ts and Cs that disposable BBQs are not permitted. You asked , and I explained I was not happy about it but, I allowed it on the gravel. I tried to make my point very clearly as it is usually ignored and I am left to clear up the mess. Disposable BBQs are not environmentally friendly, they burn the grass and remain hot for long periods, potentially causing problems for disposal and other people. These are my reasons for not permitting them.

Unfortunately toilet brushes get used for other things, so I do not put them out.

Non-electric grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely quiet countryside location not too far off the M6. Family friendly. Large flat pitches. Has a nice dog walking area. Facilities are very clean and the bins are kept out of sight. The entrance has a security gate which needs a code. This is the second time I have stayed overnight and can definitely recommend the sight for a longer stay.

Disliked Nothing

Electric optional grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great location, excellent facilities

Disliked Pay for electricity system. I hate it when a business pushes a problem on to its customers. System don’t work for me and when I asked to pay cash the guy didn’t know what to do. Will look for another site that doesn’t use this system for future stays.

From the manager: Dear Peter,

Thank you for your comments.
When running a business, one has to make decisions. The decision to charge for electricity was taken as the fairest way to solve the problem of high electric costs. Some campers may use £2, others £22. Decisions on usage is then entirely up to the guests.
I was actually away for the weekend you stayed and a friend very kindly looked after the place, if he was unsure what to do this was the reason why. A little humility goes a long way Sir.

Non-electric grass tent, touring caravan or trailer tent pitch

Liked Good level pitches excellent showers brilliant dog walking area nice secure site would recommend

Disliked Thought was expensive for dogs as they don't really use anything at £2 pound aday which puts the price of the pitch up especially if more than one dog toilets kept not flushing but owner had got someone coming out to them didn't like the fact of kids playing football and cricket behind the pitch most of the day was like a school play ground untill they went bed so not peaceful perhaps if they had a area for them to play I would pick a edge pitch next time knowing this is what happens

From the manager: Hi Julie,
Thank you for your kind comments.
Thankfully the toilets are all flushing correctly again!
Regarding dogs, I do charge for them, I think in your case with 5 dogs it was a little unusual.
Kids playing is part of the camping fun, I'm sorry if they caused you problems. As you said, pitch selection is useful.

Local attractions

Head to the medieval town of Nantwich (15 minutes’ drive) to sample local produce in the indoor market (open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday); the site owners run a cheese stall there and offer a discount to their camping guests. You can also browse indie shops and antique dealers, admire higgledy-piggledy half-timbered houses or take strolls along the River Weaver Keep the kids happy with a visit to the elephants, big cats and rhinos at Chester Zoo, or learn more about rays and sharks at Blue Planet Aquarium (both 50 minutes). The bucket-list theme park Alton Towers (an hour and 10 minutes) has extreme rollercoasters as well as gentle rides for toddlers in CBeebies Land. Any rainy days can be taken care of in Crewe (15 minutes); simply head for the bowling alleys at Tenpin Crewe or catch a film at the neighbouring cinema. If you’re keen to maintain your fitness regime, you can swim lengths of the pool and train in the gym at Crewe Lifestyle Centre.
