The Waggon and Horses: Entrance to the car park

General

  • Camping field connected to a pub near Congleton in East Cheshire
  • Peak District National Park 30 minutes; Congleton shops 10 minutes
  • Grass pitches adjacent to a pub serving meals and with a beer garden

There are few things better than a camping mini-break, and one of those is a camping mini-break with a pub right next door. And that’s where The Waggon and Horses site comes in, set in a field behind its namesake pub in the quiet Cheshire village of Eaton.

And so, what of the pub? Well, lucky old you, as it’s a cosy one, where you can gather around the log fire and tuck into locally sourced dishes for lunch and dinner as well as yummy Sunday roasts. On summer days there’s a beer garden with a barbecue menu, and everywhere is dog friendly, so your best pal can come too.

If they’ve behaved in the pub, treat dogs and kids to a romp around Astbury Mere Country Park (10 minutes’ drive), and there’s a fishing lake stocked with carp and perch there too, on the site of a former sand quarry. The National Trust-owned Lyme (40 minutes) has formal gardens and a deer park to roam, and of course, you can drive on into the Peak District National Park (30 minutes) for fantastic walks across open moorland.

Simple facilities back at The Waggon and Horses campsite include public loos and a shower block.

Please note

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the park are unlit.

Please note that the pub does not serve food on Mondays and Tuesdays, but remains open for drinks.

Excellent value for money. Basic toilet and shower, but perfectly adequate. (Perhaps would benefit from a hook in the toilet to hang a coat on whilst you're "busy"). Pub on hand for food and drink if you want to. Play area for children (not that we used it, but it's there). Near to the main road but that can't be helped. Cheap as chips.

Campsite with a good pub - Great!
All staff friendly, helpful and polite. One field to the campsite, good grass and plenty of flat clean space.

    Disliked:

Only one toilet - Not good. And this is a walk right over the field in the middle of the night :( and the morning queue is not good!

Traffic could be an issue as the site is on the A34, with constant traffic.

I stayed at The Waggon and Horses during my bike tour in Sept. I was a little bummed that the pub was closed due to water tank failure but this was not the venues fault. Upon arrival I set up my tent and someone came out to take payment and recommended another local place to eat/drink which was amazing! Hopefully when I go again the food here will be just as good. Shower facilities were basic but clean, more importantly the showers were hot and as the site was empty I had them to myself. :) I imagine at busier times this may cause pinch points as there was only two showers. After I set my tent and paid the host was happy enough to let me secure my bike near the pub out of site which was ideal. Customer service was 100%

At night the site was quite peaceful with lots of geese flying over and even some owls. There was zero light pollution due to the location which should make for an ideal night sleep. The only thing to bear in mind is the traffic on the road outside, it was mega busy all night with lorries which kept me up. Not the sites fault at all but make sure to pitch up as far away from the road as possible or bring ear muffs. :)

All in all I would definitely recommend a stay here and will be visiting again soon. :)

Thanks to all at The Waggon.

It was busy & the group next to us had a big speaker pumping out music - fortunately they did quieten down later on but it was quite intrusive. Only 1 loo isn't enough.

Not enough toilets and showers, but what is there are clean. Also need some extra drinking water taps and a washing up area would be good. We were told the site has new owners this year so hopefully they’ll invest over the winter.

Local attractions

Stately piles abound in Cheshire, so take your pick of a visit to the 18th-century chapel at Capesthorne Hall (10 minutes’ drive), or the wonderfully crooked Little Moreton Hall, a half-timbered and moated manor house (15 minutes) – and in the Old Hall at Tatton Park (35 minutes), you can all pretend to be medieval knights and stage a joust.

Soak up the fresh air on yomps along Biddulph Valley Way (10 minutes), an untaxing spot for kids as it follows a former railway line, or head out into the Peak District National Park for serious hikes along the Pennine Way. There’s a handful of golf courses within a 15-minute drive, and on the odd rainy day, you can head for the swimming pool at Congleton Leisure Centre (10 minutes).

Another local landmark you might like to check out is Jodrell Bank Observatory (15 minutes), where you can stroll around the base of the massive Lovell Telescope and take the kids hunting for aliens.
