  • Peaceful site in the South Pennines, popular with hill walkers
  • Gaddings Dam 10 minutes’ drive; Brontë Parsonage Museum half an hour
  • Farm location with dogs welcome and barbecues allowed
If you’ve decided to visit the South Pennines this year, consider Height Gate Camping Barn as the base from which to launch your hiking assault on this atmospheric area of hilly moorlands. This peaceful, dog-friendly site on a West Yorkshire farm is less than a kilometre from the Pennine Way’s iconic Stoodley Pike monument. This location makes it particularly popular with ramblers keen to explore the footpaths, bridleways and paved ‘causey paths’ (old packhorse routes) lacing these hillsides and wooded valleys. However, its proximity to trails is just part of Height Gate’s appeal. For starters, there are far-reaching views of the Calder Valley to be had from the site (and just you wait for the sun to set – you may well be in for a spectacular treat). Additionally, there are heaps of other active pursuits nearby – from mountain biking along the Pennine Way to wild swimming at Gaddings Dam (10 minutes’ drive), said to be England’s highest beach at 780 feet above sea level. And when your legs start longing for flat terrain, you can take a stroll along the Rochdale Canal (five minutes’ drive), heading south west to Todmorden (45 minutes’ walk) or north east to Hebden Bridge (55 minutes). At either destination, you’ll also be able to a) reward yourself with a pint; and b) stock up on whatever you fancy throwing on the barbecue later. Back at the site, amenities include toilet blocks with sinks and a shower.

Local attractions

Fancy a springtime walk among fields of bluebells – or an any-time-of-year scramble through wooded ravines crossed by streams? Head to National Trust - Hardcastle Crags (20 minutes’ drive), which has paths for all abilities, plus the off-the-grid Gibson Mill, with displays on the history of this early 19th-century building and a café. For a literary pilgrimage, Haworth (half an hour) is just the ticket. This small village is known for the Brontë Parsonage Museum, once home to writing sisters Charlotte, Emily and Anne. In addition to displays of period furniture and decorative arts, it has a comprehensive collection of their manuscripts. Fans of the Winter Olympics should make a beeline for Ski Rossendale (35 minutes), where they’ll be able to have a go at snowboarding or skiing on artificial slopes. If you prefer to slide down the hill in (relative) comfort, there are also tubing sessions.
