  • Family-friendly back to basics site in rural Northumberland
  • A five-minute drive to Heddon-on-the-Wall and Hadrian's Wall
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; historic pubs and alpaca farm nearby
Dubbed Hadrian’s Wall country, this was once the land of the Romans. It's hard to imagine the world of crossbows and armour now, but timeworn battlements, fortresses, and ramparts will help you to travel back in time… In the Northumberland countryside, close to the ancient Hadrian’s Wall (could this be the longest UNESCO World Heritage Site, at 75 miles long?), Pitch on the Wall Campsite is a small, family-friendly site smack bang in the middle of Hadrian’s Wall country. Within 15 minutes’ drive of Newcastle upon Tyne and five minutes from the historic town of Heddon-on-the-Wall, this is a fine base to conquer the country Roman-style, explore its networking of hiking and cycling routes, or chase through the sloping countryside, using the wall as your guide. This a back to basics site with just running water and portable toilets, so it's a real rural Northumberland experience. It wouldn’t be right to let your pooch miss out on all this greenery, so dogs are welcome too, and noise is kept to a minimum after 11pm so you can stock up on your snoozing for another day spent out exploring. You'll be able to keep warm of an evening as campfires are allowed on site (grab a firepit on site before they all go…) with wood available for purchase. Pub grub and wholesome meals are served at several pubs and cafes with a five-minute drive, but you may prefer to pull out all the stops for a family barbecue on site. Grab all the extra buns and bits for the grill at several shops five minutes away, or simply sign up for food shopping delivered through your tent flap on site.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great campsite on large field with amazing views and good value at £15 per night. There's no allocated piches so you have the freedom to choose where you camp.

The site is dog friendly, which suits us as our dog loves camping.

Its walking distance to the Hadrian's Wall Path, which we would have loved to visit but with the beautiful weather at the weekend it was too hot to walk the dog! So we got to relax and enjoy the campsite for the day instead.

Disliked Given the capacity of the campsite it could do with at least 2 additional porta pottys. The 2 on site were very full by the end of the weekend.

There's no bins on site for dog waste. A couple of strategically placed dog poo bins on the fences would be good.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely clean and peaceful site. Beautiful views and you can choose where to pitch your tent yourself. Fire pits to hire were great too.

Disliked Be good if the toilets were dotted around the field rather than being together next to the gate as the means they can be quite a walk depending where you pitch and a little awkward if like when we went people are basically pitched around them trying to make them their own personal toilets

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Spacious, reasonable priced, good location for Hadrian's Wall, adquate portaloos & bins.

Disliked Noisy: close to major A-road, which is noisy even throughout the night, also a tractor in the adjacent field was very noisy until 11pm. Airplanes overhead every hour or so through the night. Site un-manned, so noise from people partying isn't controlled.

Local attractions

For rural explores, wander right into the farmlands from the site, join the Hadrian’s Wall at Heddon-on-the-wall (five minutes' drive), or feed the grinning alpacas at the nearby alpaca farm (five minutes). Those who prefer to travel on two wheels can hire a bike locally, glide alongside the river at Riverside Country Park (five minutes) or tackle England's largest forest in the west, Kielder Forest, where you'll need to pedal harder and faster to catch up with wriggling red squirrels and soaring ospreys overhead. History follows you everywhere you go in this area, whether it's Hadrian's wall (five minutes), the many historical beamed pubs or the birthplace of 'the father of the railways', George Stephenson’s cottage (five minutes). For a sandier day out, visit the craggy headlands of Tynemouth (35 minutes), whip out your bodyboard for Long Sands Beach, or raise your spears for action behind the battlements of the clifftop castle overlooking the beach.
