Non-electric grass pitch
Spacious pitches
Large flat field with plenty of space between pitches
Views of the countryside

  • Peaceful rural site on a working farm a half-hour drive from Newcastle
  • Prudhoe 10 minutes’ drive; Whitley Bay 50 minutes
  • One-acre dog exercise field; less than one mile from a pub
Hoping to leave the car (and related headaches such as traffic woes, low-emission zones and parking fees) at home next time you go on holiday? Please consider booking at Bowler’s Hill Campsite. This simple Northumberland spot is within about two miles of two train stations (Stocksfield and Prudhoe), and it can also be reached by bus. Set on a working farm in a scenic rural location, this family-friendly site has spacious plots for tents in a flat and open field, with no restrictions on how big your pitch can be. It also welcomes your four-legged friends. Indeed, dogs have their very own one-acre exercise field where they can run up and down to their heart’s content. Those who can’t (or won’t) let go of the convenience of driving can reach Prudhoe in about 10 minutes by car. The peaceful site is also handily located to reach highlights like Newcastle (half an hour’s drive) and the Northumberland coast (one hour)… and be back in time to get the barbecue going for dinner. If you don’t fancy cooking after a long day of exploring, you can take advantage of the country pub, tea rooms and small shops within the local area (the pub, for example, is less than one mile from base).

What customers say

A large, peaceful campsite with spacious pitches and lovely countryside views. Flexible arrival/departure times and a dog field were a hit. However, some found the lack of drinking water and portaloo cleanliness disappointing. Basic, but great for a back-to-basics getaway.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Unrestricted pitch sizes. Big open spaces, stunning views and dark skies allowed us to see the meteor shower.

Disliked It is high up (giving the stunning views) so was very windy our first night.
No open pub within walking distance as advertised.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful view, loads of space, easy booking. Quiet and peaceful site.

Disliked Only 2 portaloo’s for the whole site, alcohol jel rather than running water to wash hands and the single shower for the site was grubby and the inner shower bit locked.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked It’s a lovely campsite, you’re free to put your tent out of the way so great for people who panic around other people! The owners are great our first night our new tent snapped and we could not use it so they allowed us to add an extra day on so we could go back home and come back the next day! Showers available however we did not use them! Only a 6 minute drive to shops where there is a co op if you need anything!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Extremely spacious so you can have your pitch as large as you like. Basic but quiet and relaxing. Porta loos kept very clean and have loo roll and hand sanitiser. Dog field great for letting the pooch have a run. You are sent an email with a site map and check in instructions, which is self check in pick your own pitch no hassle.

Disliked Could do with spacing out the toilets but isn’t a mega issue.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked The remoteness of the site, basic but enough

Disliked Couldn’t find a water tap. Maybe because we didn’t search enough but we had our own anyway

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We do have two water taps on site - one beside the toilets and one at the far end of the field. They are shown on the map in our welcome pack. Please do not hesitate to call us if you are stuck - we are always happy to help. We hope to welcome you back again soon.

Local attractions

National Trust properties in the area include Cherryburn (five minutes’ drive) and Gibside (20 minutes). The former is a pretty country cottage where Thomas Bewick, renowned for his books about British birds, was born in the 1750s. At Gibside, a landscaped Georgian garden features splendid views of the Derwent Valley. In Newcastle-upon-Tyne (half an hour), the Great North Museum: Hancock displays archaeological discoveries and natural history artefacts, as well as Egyptian sarcophagi and Japanese armour. Grainger Market is a top spot to refuel before heading to St. James’ Park, home of Newcastle United Football Club, for a stadium tour and a climb up to the roof for panoramic city views. If you have your kayak with you, head to Whitley Bay (50 minutes), where you can also just relax on the beach. Further north along the coast is Alnmouth Beach (one hour), a sandy stretch backed by vegetation-covered dunes that are home to assorted birdlife.
