The High Hermitage Caravan Park: No room for an awning and it was like a gypsy site with vans and cars parked on top of each other.

General

  • Quiet countryside park among ancient woodland
  • Tyne fishing available nearby: permits at reception
  • Wildlife haven a short walk from the village of Ovingham

Customer service is the name of the game at The High Hermitage Caravan Park, a peaceful place in the Northumberland countryside where staff are always on hand to deal with queries or concerns, and to keep the amenities up to high standards.

The landscape includes ancient woodland and the site's own stream, Kitty's Burn, all in a wildlife haven a short walk from the village of Ovingham via a few friendly local pubs. Many guests use the park as a base for the Northumberland coast; other famed destinations like Hadrian's Wall and Alnwick Castle are within easy reach.

The High Hermitage is less than a mile from Prudhoe railway station, where you can access trains to Newcastle, Carlisle, Hexham and Glasgow.

Fishing is available on site; pick up a permit at reception.

Please note

Group bookings of 10 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Potential but very disappointing09/14/2021

I can see the potential in this site, the owner is spending a lot of money making it look good. Pitches are off a tarmac road, up a short gravel embankment with views of trees in one direction. All pitches were fully serviced with EHU*, water & waste. Ovingham is under a mile away, where there are a couple of pubs. Prudhoe was across a very narrow bridge, okay for walking but not driving (see below)

    Disliked:

I’m sorry to say there were quite a few dislikes with this site. Whilst I appreciate the potential with the site, it’s definitely not there yet and a lot of construction was still evident and at a cost of £30 (+ £3 for dog) I think it was expensive. The site appears to have a high number of statics, I have no problem with but the investment appears to have gone into this part of the site, some on the touring site but absolutely nothing on the toilet facilities. There was a old toilet block with 1 men toilet and shower, and 1 women’s toilet and shower. At the front of the Motorhome/caravan pitches, was a field full of tents where a rally was being held (all participants were women). The next morning the tent occupants were using both the men’s and ladies facilities. Another gripe was that the access to the site was difficult, as if you approached from the Prudhoe side, the bridge that needs to be crossed is only 2 metres wide. No chance I would think for the vast majority of caravan/moho users. In fact our sat nav also took us down a country lane that was a dead end for cars but okay for bikes! This could have been avoided if the owner had advised us of the correct route to take to the site on the confirmation email. *Regarding the fully serviced pitch, which was great, the owner advised us to use any pitch but when we came to hook up the electric, the EHU unit didn’t work. When we went to advise the owner, he then said he knew about that and we should use the splitter on the next pitch! Hence the score for customer service below!

The site is undergoing major changes, there are static and lodges. What looks like a new reception building, so much going on its looks like being amazing when its done. The present touring and camping facilities are old and basic toilet and shower. There are lovely hard standing for motor home & touring caravans with electric, water and drainage. We were here for the Rugby weekend in Newcastle.
Well put together info from site manager. Prudhoe easy walk with good Pup/food friendly staff. Train station. If you wanted to walk into Prudhoe it's quite a hill.

    Quiet location

    Disliked:

After traveling for over three weeks and staying in excess of twenty sites, this was undoubtedly the worst and most expencive. One basin, shower, urinal and leaking loo is not enough for the male guests onsite and these were very, very old and tired. We were told to pitch up on any available hardstanding but this was a joke as one has a Road Roller parked on it and another was obscured by a Roofing Truck leaving only two pitches available. After driving up the steep aproach to the pitch (which they all had) and leveling up we settled down for a cuppa and realised there was no electric, the electric box had not been connected to the electricity supply! I also note that negative comments from previous years have not been addressed.

Local attractions

The nearby town of Prudhoe, about 11 miles from the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, has a Norman castle and a waterpark as well as access to the old Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, now the Tyne Valley Line and still running regularly between the two cities.

If you're anywhere around this part of England, a must-see is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hadrian's Wall, the most visited destination in the north of England, running for about 73 miles across the north of England from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend, across the North Pennines, and along Northumberland National Park.

The wall has several Roman sites along its length, including Housesteads Roman fort, the most complete Roman fort in Britain; eight forts and live excavations at the Roman Army Museum and Roman Vindolanda, and Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths and Museum.

Paintball, quad biking, go karting, offroad 4x4 driving and a Go Ape! are all available locally. A shopping centre is 20 minutes away.
