  • Small, peaceful and traditional site on a working Yorkshire Dales farm
  • A 25-minute drive from Barnard Castle; 10 minutes from bicycle hire
  • Two pubs within walking distance; barbecues permitted
Taking some time out in the Yorkshire Dales National Park? A scoop of peace, a dash of rural scenery and a nice sprinkle of walking trails are some of the ingredients at Pepper Hall Campsite in Arkengarthdale. This small, traditional site has a tasty stay on a working farm in the national park, 25 minutes’ drive away from Barnard Castle. This is a scenic spot with Swaledale sheep and beef cattle surrounding the site and walks straight from the site, either up onto the traditional Grouse moor or down into the valley bottom along the Arkle beck. Cycling is another popular pastime here, as there’s bicycle hire for the dales 10 minutes’ drive away. To get to the site, you’ll have to cross over a shallow ford with a small stream. There’s a private running water supply on site and aside from that, you’ll have access to a toilet and permission to set up a barbecue. Traditional ales and good food may be your first port of call. Handily, Langthwaite village is well-known for its pub five minutes’ walk away, which was rebuilt after floods and now has some great grub and drinks. There’s another pub 15 minutes’ walk away with a warm welcome and food. There are a couple more cheery towns or villages around, including Reeth (10 minutes’ drive for a shop, playground and museum) and Richmond (a historic town, half an hour away).

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Great budget campsite in a lovely location

Disliked: Not all pitches were very level and the grass was very long which was a bit annoying as you ended up with always wet feet and bringing grass into tent. Wouldn’t put me off booking again though just some feedback!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The campsite was quiet, remote, accessible and the directions were good. The site was not filled up with lots of tents and there was plenty of room. There was a tap for water and recycling which was good. There was a toilet and sink which were as described. There is a pub five mins away, although we didnt get to try this. There were waterfalls around thirty mins away and our son managed to have a nice swim despite the weather. Olivia was lovely and came to see you when you arrived and to see that everything was ok. We enjoyed our stay. Reeth is ten mins away by car and we visited the The Buck Inn for a meal and drinks which was nice.

Disliked: the person that pitched up next to us and snored loudly! not an issue with the site of course!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We visited in August 2023 as two adults and 2 border collies. Peaceful, quiet location and really friendly people (thank you for towing my car out of the mud and not being so cool about it when I felt like a total idiot!) Gorgeous pub, The Red Lion is just down the road and had a lovely atmosphere - the perfect place to finish our hike. Great walks and well-marked footpaths straight from the campsite. Local towns such as Reeth and Grinton also have a great selection of pubs - the food at the King’s Arms in Reeth is to be recommended. Also, not too far from Richmond and a big Tesco in case you forget your dog food like we did (oops)! Thank you for having us, we had a fantastic time and I am sure we will see you again!

Liked: The remote setting and views was unbelievable. It was really nice to just take the afternoon, night and the following morning in with my kids. No phone, no other technology just spending time to relax and have fun. Was really grateful for Olivia the owners daughter sending us a message with directions as we had no signal within 6miles radius nice touch.
