A 12th-century castle with 200 acres of woodlands and a lake – outdoor stays don't get much more regal than that… Gilling Castle is a family-focused site deep in the North Yorkshire countryside. A half-mile walk from the village of Gilling East (that's about ten to 15 minutes at a good pace), this spot is well-positioned for all manner of Yorkshire jaunts, with lots of on and off-site entertainment options to fill your days away. Gilling Castle has about 10 miles of footpaths and bike trails to explore, as well as a large body of water where you can get up to aquatic adventures like canoeing and kayaking. On top of that, tennis courts, access to a golf course and a seasonal kids' club are on offer, plus a gym and swimming pool (10 minutes' away by bike) – suffice it to say that you won't be short of active pursuits around here. Set between the Howardian Hills and the North York Moors National Park, both of which can be reached within a few minutes by road, Gilling Castle is advantageously located in central Yorkshire, making it possible to get out on day trips to further-flung spots like the Yorkshire Dales National Park or the coast of North East England within about an hour.
