Splendid strolls through the Yorkshire Dales by day, glam rural retreats by night – that's the setup at Cherish Glamping, a small, independent site between Hawes and Askrigg in Upper Wensleydale. Each yurt here is decorated differently, but all have uninterrupted views over the gorgeous green hills that stretch out as far as the eye can see… This part of Wensleydale is a rural spot indeed, with heaps of lush meadows, craggy rocks, moorlands and waterfalls to explore. The area also has plenty of attractive towns and villages – the nearest of these, Hawes, is a 10-minute drive away, and is said to be the highest market town in England. Make tracks here for industrial heritage sites and a popular weekly market. Back at base, each yurt is kitted out for maximum comfort, with a kingsize four-poster bed coming as standard (additional sleeping arrangements can be made for larger bookings). These northern climes can get chilly at night, so there's also a woodburning stove to keep you cosy. A bubbly, chemical-free hot tub is also on hand for warming up in the open air. Self-catered breakfasts and light bites are sorted thanks to the coffee machine, kettle, toaster and fridge. For more substantial meals, head to the Indian fire bowl for an alfresco sizzle. Hawes has a handy local shop where you can stock up on supplies.

Local attractions

Thanks to the long-distance Herriot Way path, several spots can be reached on foot from Cherish Glamping. Head west to explore Hardraw Force waterfall (10 minutes' drive or about an hour on foot) and the town of Hawes (10 minutes' drive or just over an hour's walk). Here you can find cheesy treats at the Wensleydale Creamery, as well as local history at the Dales Countryside Museum. Those who are feeling adventurous can also sort potholing trips in town. Less extreme underground jaunts, meanwhile, are on hand at White Scar Cave (30 minutes' drive). For other natural wonders, head to some of the other waterfalls in the area, like Aysgarth Falls (20 minutes) or Mill Gill Force (35 minutes). Kids (and adults who don't mind crawling through a monster's jaws to get into the place) may well appreciate a trip to The Forbidden Corner, a classic theme park and folly garden full of whimsy and tomfoolery (35 minutes). Fans of historic houses, meanwhile, should head to Bolton Castle, where guests can try their hand at falconry in the elegant grounds.
