Local attractions

To begin with caves, birds of prey or estates of old? If it’s the historical stuff you’re really into, close spots include Beningbrough Hall (20 minutes’ drive), a National Trust estate with Italian touches and great gardens for family or dog walks, or Newby Hall & Gardens (20 minutes), where there are house tours, boat trips down the river Ure and a miniature railway. In York, the National Railway Museum (half an hour) will carry on any history-themed itinerary – as will archery, canoeing or bushcraft in the grounds of Ripley Castle (half an hour), a stroll around Fountains Abbey (half an hour) or a brew in the splendid Harewood House (35 minutes). To turn your attention to the wild stuff, however, head for the York Bird of Prey Centre (20 minutes), where events take place throughout the year, or Mother Shipton's Cave and the Petrifying Wall (20 minutes) in the Royal Forest, a natural place with plenty of legends to keep things exciting.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Warm bathroom

Disliked: Very dark site. Difficult to get information. No one there to open gate on arrival and all a bit ad hoc. Lots of other guests swearing loudly around us. Didn’t have a nice feel.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: It was our first time renting a motor home and we were pleasantly surprised with the camp site. We had a convenient pitch easily accessible for shower block and washing up station. All were spotless. Great location with Naresborough and Harrogate nearby. Luke was very helpful when we arrived.

The wildlife.

Disliked: The timing of the toilet block being cleaned 10 -11am and 5-6pm both too early.
The approach road ended up driving up a wrong road and had to uncouple the caravan
A resident said it happens at least 3 times a week!
Not signposted well enough.
