Heaps of space (52,000 square metres of it, in fact), with easy motorway access, quiet rural surroundings and direct access onto the Yorkshire Wolds Way? All very promising, but the clincher is still to come: pitches at William’s Den are right next door to an award-winning adventure play attraction (and this may well win you many bonus points with the kids…) Just on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds and 10 minutes’ drive from the East Yorkshire town of Brough, this is a place that’s all about fresh air and freedom. Days out don’t come much easier than simply strolling next door where the kids can have the run of the play meadow, the secret woodland and the sand/water play areas, with all sorts of mud kitchens, tyre swings and den building materials to keep them quiet for many an hour. Stays here aren’t all about the kids though – dogs are welcome everywhere except the William's Den play attraction, as long as they are supervised, and they have their own exercise facility to visit next door (this requires an additional fee). Otherwise, there are plenty of dog-friendly walks accessible directly from the site. And all of the family can take advantage of the area’s other attractions, including Tour de Yorkshire bike routes, rambles on the Yorkshire Wolds Way and days of fishing or golf. Something else that should appeal to all ages is the on-site restaurant, open daily for breakfast sandwiches, lunches, wood-fired pizzas and particularly tasty homemade ice cream (take it all back to your pitch in eco-friendly packaging if you prefer). It’s a pick-your-own-pitch setup at this site, and guests will have access to good-quality off-grid toilets and showers, washing-up facilities and a chemical disposal point.

Liked Good flat area, close to amenities and a very nice and quiet place.

Disliked While the toilets in the main building are nice, the ones to be used in campsite out of hours are not so great.

Liked Clean site, family campfire put on by staff, level pitch, easy access to facilities whilst Williams Den was open, other campers mentioned the showers were hot but we did not use them personally

Disliked Portaloo toilets (these were kept clean) but would've preferred toilet block

Liked Not very much. Check in staff were pleasant enough

Disliked Hard, stony ground. Exorbitant cost for what you receive in return- no hot water. No facilities on the field itself. Loud noise from road. Over priced everything in Williams Den. Shocking hygiene in the toilets.

Liked So much space and superclean facilities.

Disliked We had awful weather so a shower was really challenging to keep clothes and towel dry when changing area had no roof!

Liked Close to Williams den. Huge field and plenty of space.
Washing up area and showers were clean.

Disliked Quiet time wasn’t checked on and monitored- huge group arrive after us and was close by and has music, singing and were loud until they turned off around 2/3am. Several other campers than myself kept up most the night.

Toilets portaloo’s so not the best. Nicer to walk into Williams den and use those when the centre is open, especially when travelling solo with a 3yr old as the portaloos don’t fit you both in and the centre has family cubicles.

Local attractions

On days when you’re not at the adventure play attraction, pack up a picnic and head off for a walk on the Yorkshire Wolds Way (some of it, anyway – it’s 80 miles long) or a bike ride following some of the routes used for the Tour de Yorkshire race. Somewhat less ambitious strolls can be had at North Cave Wetlands, a mile and a half away. Sicking with the outdoor activities, there’s a golf club and fishing lake within a 10-minute drive, or you could take a little tour of the vines (and a sample of the wines) at Little Wold Vineyard (a mile from the site). Soak up some seaside time too with a day on the beach at Hornsea (35 minutes’ drive) or Bridlington (50 minutes). For some urban time, take yourselves over to Hull (25 minutes) to eyeball the sea creatures at The Deep aquarium, wander around the market town of Beverley (15 minutes) or head to York (45 minutes) for a city packed with history and heritage to explore.
