  • Family park close to the Durham coastline, with sea and beach views
  • Smart facilities including a pool, sports court and bar-restaurant
  • A 25-minute drive from Durham and 40 from Newcastle city centre
A pebble’s propulsion from golden sand dunes, with a perfect view of the blue-green ocean as far as the eye can see… Crimdon Dene Holiday Park is an excellent spot for discovering the splendour of the little-known stretch of coastline known as the Durham Heritage Coast. Getting out onto the nearest stretch of sand is a cinch from here, as Crimdon beach is a short walk away; the site's also well placed for mini safaris in the local nature reserves, strolls on the coast path and games of golf with cracking clifftop views. Certain guests may decree the North Sea to be just a tad too chilly for a full-on swim; those folk will be pleased to hear that there's warmer water at the indoor pool back at the park, and even warmer still in the Jacuzzi next to it. An outdoor sports court and playground are on hand for those who require a bit of space to run about, and an amusement arcade for those who'd like to invest their pocket money in games of skill, luck and concentration. Fuel all this activity with meals and drinks at the spacious bar-restaurant or hot drinks from the coffee bar. As a family park, Crimdon Dene has a good range of daytime activities, kids' clubs and so forth, and in high season, there’s also plenty of evening action in the form of live music and shows (at other times, you’ll find a more toned-down entertainment schedule).

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The politeness of the receptionist who told me that I could have shown my bank card on checking in after being told I had to share my personal information with a 3rd party beforehand because it could effect my stay.

Disliked: Was told I need to scan my photo I.D before my stay and was told just something with my name wouldn’t be enough. Very angry that other people showed something with their name on. Anyone could enter the camp from the beach without I.D

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: all facilities were within a couple of minutes of the touring area. Decent toilet / shower block, decent little shop on site, entertainment complex was good.

Disliked: Despite the clear T&C and notices saying they do not accept large vans / work vans etc, it was very clear that a number of pitches were using large work vans, with large caravans. The large group of people in said vans were noisy, playing music, letting their young children drink alcohol, shouting, fighting etc. The site has a reputation, and it didn't dissapoint.

Also, the pool was so full you couldn't even swim. They let far too many people into the pool at once so there is only room to stand, so it wasn't enjoyable.

Showers

Disliked: On arrival it wasn’t obviously straight away which way to turn and the parking bay for tourers wasn’t long enough for a car and caravan- the fact there was a rut on the end showed us that lots of other people before us had the same problem.
The corner we had to go round to our row was too tight for a car and caravan.
Then when we got to the pitch we found there was a steep curb to mount to get the car off the road. Without a motor mover we would have struggled to get the caravan on the small length of lowered curb.
We were glad it was dry because instead of level grass, gravel or shingle to step out on to, we had a few scalpings in a big dip, so if it had rained we would have been stepping into a muddy puddle.
Toilets were fine when we arrived on Thursday, but needed more regular cleaning when busy on Friday and Saturday.
Despite watching two men picking up rubbish I could still count six small bits of rubbish left around our pitch after we left.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nothing - we did complain about our issues and the staff were lovely but unable to resolve problems.

Disliked: Rubbish around site, pitched on top of one another. Absolutely no disabled facilities despite claiming there was. A larger toilet cubicle either a broken tap and not disabled shower doesn’t equate to disabled facilities. Very noisy site. Drunk holiday makers and the smell of cannabis. Awful. I felt very unsafe.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nothing. View was nice but also available further down the coastline at a better site.

Disliked: Incompetent receptionist double-booked our pitch, gave us so much wrong information then doubled-down on her ineptitude by blaming everyone/everything else bar her own incompetence, even trying to blame me for being unaware that she had made a significant error. Touring pitches occupied by some feral families who seemed to think that it was fine to shout out 'you f***ing c**t' to their preteen child whilst simultaneously calling their 5-6 year old a 'f***ing b******d'. The lock-code for the female toilets/showers was not needed as the lock had clearly been forced and would not close in any case, and the toilets themselves were filthy with paper strewn everywhere, and were overrun by the spawn from the feral families. The loos in the main entertainment complex were no better and I witnessed one mother drying off her sons pee-stained trousers with the hand-dryer making the whole room smell of urine. All-in-all the whole experience could only be bettered by a stay in the seventh circle of hell. Would not recommend, will not return, and as this is a second strike for Parkdean, they are most defintely out.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Quiet chilled site despite large size. Good hook up and hard standing. Clean heated toilet and shower block nearby. We were able to book for one night mid-week and had a cheap rate through pitch up. It would have been more than double booking direct on resorts own site.

Disliked: Restaurant food needs improvement
I had steak with peppercorn sauce that was runny like water. Toilets in the entertainments building were filthy 🤮

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: Everything. Only stayed 30 minutes due to a list of issues. The site was full of travellers in trucks and vans with tarmac and scrap metal onboard.
The pitches were very muddy due to cars& trucks driving across them. Toilet block was disgusting.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Staff were very friendly and helpful.
Beach and nearby walks

Disliked: Everything else!
Toilets have a code, not sure why as door doesn't shut so the WHOLE site uses them on the way to/from clubhouse.
Toilets stink of chip fat from mobile chips shop outside.
Others tourers stealing furniture from statics to sit in!
People riding around smoking weed.
Noise from clubhouse.

Local attractions

Ramble or ride along the coastal path to get the best views of the ruggedly dramatic Durham Heritage Coast, or head inland to explore ancient woodlands such as Castle Eden Dene (15 minutes' drive), a 550-acre nature reserve with more than 450 types of flora and 12 miles of footpaths. In nearby Hartlepool (10 minutes), guests can tour HMS Trincomalee, the oldest warship still afloat in the UK, along with lots of other interesting stuff at the Maritime Experience on the historic quayside. Other popular attractions include the Tweddle Children’s Animal Farm, a 15-minute walk away (perhaps a little longer if you're marshalling small people), or the fascinating living history museum at Beamish (40 minutes' drive), where kids can don hard hats for trips down the mine, ride an old tramway and get stuck into lots of dressing up and activities. It’s also well worth a trip to Durham (25 minutes), where you can stroll along the river banks for stunning views of the ancient cathedral and castle; or to Newcastle (40 minutes), which is crammed with culture and commerce.
