  • Luxurious adults-only shepherd’s huts in Teesdale, County Durham
  • A 15-minute drive to High Force Waterfall and Barnard Castle
  • Bespoke decor, kitchen, ensuite shower, kingsize bed and dining area
Chic, stylish and oh-so-comfortable, Toadlands Shepherd Huts have been set up on repurposed farmland in stunning County Durham countryside 15 minutes' drive from Barnard Castle. Whether you’re looking to unwind or are chasing an adventurous break exploring lovely Teesdale, this adults-only glampsite is a fabulous place for couples to hide away. Each hut is rather special – cosy interiors have tongue-and-groove panelling and oak floors, plus double-glazed hardwood doors and windows and thermostatically controlled electric heating to make sure you stay toasty whatever the weather's doing outside. Kickstart your day with a leisurely breakfast in your kingsize bed while taking in the views framed by the window, then rustle up meals in the fully equipped kitchen and dine in comfort at the foldaway table or out in your private garden space. The generous bathroom has a walk-in electric shower and heated towel rail. Plenty of storage, luxury linens, cotton towels and bathrobes come as part of the deal. The main dilemma comes at evening time, but it's a good one to have… take a walk to the local pub or sit back in the wood-fired hot tub (with logs provided) for an evening of stargazing? For daytimes, it's good to know that the pub isn't the only place you can walk to – you'll also be close to the start of the Tees Valley Railway walk and footpaths to other pretty Pennines spots. One thing to bear in mind: parking is 200 metres from the huts and you’ll need waterproof footwear for the walk across the field.

Bill Lunes shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked: What is there not to like, it’s exactly what we wanted, a relaxing break with a hot tub. As soon as we arrived and opened the doors to the Shepards hut we felt welcomed and relaxed, the owners went above and beyond regarding enquiries, information and kindness. I have already told my close friends about this little gem and will recommend it to anybody interested in a rural retreat for a couple, or even someone looking to get away alone for a relaxing break. The local pub is within walking distance and makes amazing pizza!

Disliked: There was nothing that we didn’t like about this place!

Local attractions

If you’re keen to get out exploring the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, now’s your chance. Landmarks you’ll want to include on your outings include dramatic High Force Waterfall, reached by a walk along the River Tees from Bowlees Visitor Centre (15 minutes’ drive). An easier stroll from the visitor centre leads up to Summerhill Force and Gibson’s Cave. Grassholme Observatory (five minutes) is a must-visit on clear nights, when you’ll hopefully get to see millions of stars in the heavens above. For a walk with no driving, take the Tees Valley Railway Walk (five minute' walk) to the Bronze Age burial site atop Kirkcarrion (45 minutes), or the scenic shores of Selset Reservoir. If that sounds a bit too sedate, head for Grassholme Reservoir (five minutes) for sailing and other watersports. What about pretty towns and villages? Well, yes. Middleton-in-Teesdale (10 minutes' drive) turns up indie shops and plenty of pubs, while Barnard Castle (15 minutes) has the sprawling remains of a riverside castle to explore, and a famous silver swan on show at The Bowes Museum (20 minutes).
