  • Outdoor stays in the grounds of a Grade II-listed country house
  • A 20-minute drive from Bury St Edmunds, Clare and Long Melford
  • Private 250-acre estate with river fishing and direct footpath access
A 250-acre country estate, you say? It looks like pitching up just got posh… This landscaped Suffolk site is set in the grounds of Boxted Hall, a Grade II-listed country house 20 minutes' drive south of Bury St Edmunds. Located in the Glem Valley and with direct river access, this quiet spot is home to an abundance of wildlife and some simply splendid scenery. There aren't any facilities like toilets or showers here, but the lack of mod cons is more than made up for by the chance to settle down right by a 700-year-old manor house. (There are decent local leisure centres 20 minutes away in Bury St Edmunds or Sudbury if you feel it's time for a shower.) Angling is possible in the river, which meanders along the edge of the park and is full of fine fishy specimens. The parkland here is well-maintained and harbours much fab history – the arched footbridge over the estate's moat, for example, dates back to the 11th century. The site is also a few minutes' ramble from a 13th-century village church – all in all, it makes quite the pretty picture. Looking to pick up a piece of the past of your own? Boxted Hall is within a 20-minute drive of antiquing hubs like Clare and Long Melford. For more ephemeral purchases, set off for Glemsford (10 minutes), where there are two food shops, or Hartest (five minutes), home to a butcher's and a brewery.

Local attractions

East Anglia probably isn't at the top of most people's lists when it comes to the world of wine. But most people don't know what they're missing – head out for a glass or two at Giffords Hall Vineyard (10 minutes' drive) or Toppesfield Vineyard (30 minutes) to sip on sparkling and rosé varieties. There are also plenty of attractive Suffolk towns and villages to keep you occupied. Long Melford (15 minutes) is well-known for its two manor houses, galleries and antique shops; other objets d'art can be picked up in Clare (20 minutes), which also ought to be on your radar for being home to The Gainsborough Health Club and Spa. A little further afield is Newmarket (35 minutes), a hub of all things equestrian that's home to a racecourse and Britain's National Horseracing Museum. If you don't get your kicks from the race day picks, perhaps try monkeying around at Go Ape Thetford (50 minutes) or seeking eco-friendly inspiration at RSPB Flatford Wildlife Garden (50 minutes).
