  • Remote airfield site surrounded by farmland
  • A 15-minute drive to Woodbridge; 35 minutes to Aldeburgh on the coast
  • Village shop and pub 10 minutes’ cycle away or a five-minute drive
As a pretty, grassy airfield surrounded by farmland in what the site calls ‘the middle of nowhere’, Monewden Airfield is a quiet getaway indeed. With just the occasional light aircraft landing or taking off and lots of local wildlife, you’ll have plenty of scope for relaxing, playing games or plotting out a big adventure in Suffolk. Before you get to that adventure, however, food might be the first thing on your brain. Very handily, the village shop and pub are a 10-minute bike ride or a five-minute car ride away in Otley. Food sorted, next up on your itinerary might be Woodbridge (15 minutes’ drive), a town with a boating centre, or the east coast. Aldeburgh and Felixstowe’s seaside amusements are only 35 minutes’ drive away. Back at base, there are shower and toilet facilities, along with a toilet emptying point. Families are very welcome; as a small working airfield, kids will need supervision at all times.

A-frame camping pod

Liked: Everything. Lisa was very friendly and welcoming on arrival and showed us to the A frame. It was very comfortable and well equipped, including all of the kitchen equipment you might need, made up bedding and towels, a heater, a fan and plenty of plug sockets. It was lovely to watch the planes taking off and landing and very peaceful. There is plenty of green space for children to play and everyone was quiet and respectful in the evening. The sunrise was beautiful too. If we could suggest any improvement, it would be to fit a small blind in the upper level windows as our child likes to get up with the sun! We found this property last minute on the Pitchup website and would definitely go back.

Electric optional grass touring pitch

Liked: Loved the novelty of the planes in storage & the occasional take off and landing of light aircraft.

Disliked: A single toilet & shower meant a short wait on occasions. But not really an issue.

Electric optional grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Amazing stay- lovely welcome from owner as well as others using the site for flying aeroplanes- thought that having one loo and shower would be an issue but it wasn’t- good space given to each pitch which allowed for feeling of privacy an so quiet- great access for walks and cycle rides as well as local pubs who were also welcoming and friendly

Disliked: Nothing!

Electric optional grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: For me the peace and tranquility of this site is what drew me to book a weekend here. The pitches are on the edge of a well mowed level grass strip close to a grass runway. Private light aircraft owners use the airfield with just a handful of take offs/landings over the time I was there so nothing disturbed the peace and quiet. The owners are lovely people and always on hand to make sure you have a happy stay. The site has wifi but I didn’t use it as my mobile signal was ok and I didn’t use the optional electric hook up. The site itself is close to the village of Otley and has a couple of nice pubs within a few miles. Framlingham, Woodbridge, Sutton Hoo and the East Coast are also within easy reach for sightseeing and days out. There’s plenty to keep everyone happy. The facilities at Monewden Airfield were very clean and well maintained with a unisex toilet with hand basin and a separate unisex shower room. When the site is busier it was sometimes necessary to queue for the washroom especially early in the mornings. An additional dedicated dishwash facility would also be nice although I got by ok with existing facilities. I would recommend a stay here and would also thank Lisa and Steve for their hospitality.

A-frame camping pod

Liked: We stayed in the A frame and loved it! You are literally in the middle of nowhere so it is quiet and peaceful and we spent the evening on the decking with a bottle of wine looking at the stars. For us, it was perfect! It's tiny but had everything we needed. Linen, plates, cultery, glasses, single stove, kettle, toaster, washing up facilities etc all provided (we didn't think it would be so could have saved half a boot load!). Powerful shower was appreciated. Great as a base to expolre the area and not too far from the coast and various other attractions. (We did Southwold and Framlington castle for our one night stay). Would love to go back.

Disliked: Sofa bed was a small double, so in hindsight i would have had the kids sleeping downstairs!
