  • Family-friendly secure site in meadows near Woodbridge, Suffolk
  • A 20-minute drive to Sutton Hoo; 25 minutes to Felixstowe beach
  • Dogs are welcome; five minutes’ walk to a pub
How about a Suffolk break at a spot with masses of room for kids and dogs to run around safely? A break on 4.5 acres of secluded meadow surrounded by mature trees? Dan’s Meadow is a small family-run site accessed by a tree-lined driveway with a locked gateway for extra security. It’s close to the historic riverside town of Woodbridge (10 minutes’ drive), in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so there are lots of coastal walks and bike rides to discover (most seem to include pub stops). If you’re bringing dogs, there are riverside walks direct from the site too – the friendly owners are happy to suggest touring and exploring ideas for you if you want to go further afield. Family-centric on-site facilities include a modern loo and shower block. There’s also a utility room with hot and cold running water and a communal fridge-freezer. Barbecues are permitted on site, and there’s plenty of room for sitting around the fire and relaxing with a glass of wine as you eat. If you prefer an evening stroll, there’s a warm welcome at the local pub (five minutes’ walk), and there’s a takeaway nearby too.

Liked: Showers were lovely, spacious and warm. Red lion and fish and fish and chip shop very handy.

Disliked: Would have been nice to be able to add WiFi during our stay. apparently this is only available a the time of booking form which I did not see the option for at the time.

From the manager: Good morning Julie, Thank you for your review, unfortunately as you booked through Pitch up you would have been on our rally field but due to the field being very damp we placed you up on our members site. The rally field which you booked through Pitch up does that have Wi-Fi included so unfortunately you wouldn't have been able to get it. Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this. Regards Kylie

Electric grass pitch

Liked: I wish all campsites was this good everything was clean even with all the recent wet weather. The toilets + shower rooms were perfect and lovely and warm. The kitchen even had a fridge if you don't have one on board your van. You can hear the train line but its perfectly acceptable background noise. Good signal on 3 network so didn't need the wifi. Very detailed site instructions and plan was emailed which answered all questions. Look forwards to returning in the future when its warmer and no ground frost.

Disliked: If your really fussy bit of a slope but easier sorted with ramps.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Excellent Facilities and loved the fact we had the site to ourselves the first night and almost to ourselves the second night! Pretty trees right at the other sides of the site - would have liked to have stayed nearer there a bit further from facilities to have felt more in nature and immersed in site. Very well located for rendelsham forest, Ipswich and Felixstowe beach!

Disliked: The noise from the road and trains; wasn’t the most ‘back to nature’ site we’ve stayed with the floodlights in the distance or the noisy road and trains or the industrial vehicles. Would have preferred a pitch more immersed in the site but no one is around to talk to at weekends.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Good morning Gemma, Thank you for leaving us a review, sorry the noise of the local area had an effect on your stay. Unfortunately during the time of the year when all the leaves are off the trees we have no way of blocking out the sound of the train and road. If we had placed you down where you said you would have had the noise a lot more then you did. We are pleased to hear that our facilities were great and that you enjoyed the scenery. Regarding changing pitches you could have called the number i sent you and i would have been more than happy to move you. Regards Kylie

Electric grass pitch

Liked: The place was quiet and serene. The showers and toilets were very clean. Shower was powerful and hot. The owner was very hospitable as he came over, introduced himself and gave us some information about the area also, places to visit.

Disliked: No was no available toilet rolls in the ladies cubicle during our stay. The shower cubicles were claustrophobic.

From the manager: Good afternoon Marcus, Thank you for your review, it was very nice of you. Regarding the toilet roll, if you had have mentioned it to one of our staff we would have been happy to re stock the loo roll. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. Regards Kylie

Local attractions

Suffolk has much in the way of history to discover, from walks along fortified walls at majestic Framlingham Castle or the towering keep and maze of underground passages at Orford Castle (both 25 minutes’ drive). And of course one of the big-hitting attractions in these parts is the Anglo-Saxon burial treasures at Sutton Hoo (20 minutes), all gloriously displayed in a National Trust-owned exhibition. Many local countryside walks and cycle routes include pub stops, and you can play golf or take to horseback to ride through local woodlands within a half-hour’s drive. The odd rainy day is taken care of with a swimming pool and cinema in Ipswich (20 minutes). The seaside town of Felixstowe (25 minutes) is a great day trip for splashing around off the sandy beach or checking out the arcades along the pier, while Flatford Mill (40 minutes) sits in gorgeous countryside in Constable Country and is a popular spot for walks along the River Stour and in Dedham Vale.
