  • Pop-up site in rural Suffolk near Stowmarket and Bury St Edmunds
  • A 30-minute drive from Thetford Forest Park and Ipswich river cruises
  • Stay in an old orchard with playground and communal firepit on site
Want to be in deepest countryside but close enough to a town for a spot of shopping or a night in the pub? Check out the offerings at Whitehouse Farm, set in six acres of glorious rural Suffolk, well away from roads and traffic noise and yet only 20 minutes’ drive from the pubs and indie shops of Bury St Edmunds. This is also a super spot for kids, as there is a playground with climbing equipment on site and some fab family walks directly from the farm – you can bring the pooches too but they need to be kept on leads please. The pitches are located in the meadow, just beyond where the shepherd huts sit in the old orchard among damson, apple, pear and greengage trees. Shared facilities include loos, showers, a water tap, a washing-up area and a laundry room. Barbecues are available if you feel inspired to cook, and there's a communal firepit too for sociable evenings. You can pick up supplies in Stowmarket (15 minutes’ drive) – and if you don't fancy cooking, well… those Bury St Edmunds pubs await. For chilly evenings, a sauna is also available (chat to site staff for more details).

Kestrel shepherd's hut

Liked: The best place we've stayed. Short, spontaneous however a little gem. Firstly - owner is fantastic. So friendly and welcoming, had a chat about the area and took time to chat with the children. I arrived alone (mother & 2 children) felt super comfortable and safe in the area which is important as not completely secluded. Beautifully presented and had everything we needed and more. Everything pristine and clean. The bed is so comfortable and beautifully decorated. Owners, Genuinely has set up such a fantastic place. The huts are in the trees and just beautiful. The communal toilets and showers are pristine and never once was anything empty or unclean. 10/10. There's also an automatic light that comes on if in the dark by toilets. There is so much space! My husband arrived next day with our very large dog who was also very welcomed, again my husband was greeted on arrival and had a good conversation. There is an 8 station fitness, obsticle course that we as a family and we really, really loved. We did it in the rain and honestly it made it even better! One of our favourite additions. We were also able to go on the row boat on the pond, we went as it was turning dark, again such a lovely time and a really love addition. There's so much to explore, we're booking to come again with friends and children for the summer holidays. We don't usually go somewhere more than once but it's all the extra touches that really makes it. There is much here to do including climbing frames, bug hotels, sauna on the pond and more. Again a long review but money is money and we want to be sure where we're spending it! I highly, highly recommend this place. It's so deserving. Additional notes. Rain or shine, this place is worth coming. We had majority rainy, wet weather, didn't impact how great this place is. We are a vegan family. We ordered from papa John's and the Indian. Great vegan options and we really enjoyed it.

Disliked: Honestly, nothing. Everything was fantastic.

Non-electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked: Great and clean facilities

Disliked: Campervan pitches are not as what expected, tent pitches and huts are at rear of property that are probably quite nice, how ever Campervan pitches are at the front on what’s like the owners front drive! very small pitches for campervans with only 2 being available very close together on a small patch of grass, no view or anything like that. People walking and driving past on the gravel driveway next to the pitch

From the manager: We're sorry that you didn't like the campervan pitches, and although they are at the front of the site they do have a nice view over the pond. We are only a small site and the other campers parking is before the pitches so they don't usually drive past the campervan spots. It is never particularly busy, and on this particular weekend there were only 3 other sets of campers on site. Of all the 15 reviews received from campervan guests, this is the only one that didn't score 10/10.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: We had an amazing weekend. The host was extremely friendly and helpful. We had a great pitch near a small swing set so the children could go off and play whenever they wanted. Very accommodating of our 2 dogs also. The most beautiful swimming pond and some really lovely walks. We will definitely be back!

Non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Lovely setting on a small site in a quiet location away from busy roads and light pollution. Good facilities for toilets, showers and washing up. Nice pitches in the meadow on good grass and nice to have picnic benches provided as well as allowance of BBQs.

Local attractions

The pretty town of Bury St Edmunds (20 minutes’ drive) holds a local market every Wednesday and Saturday, where you can pick up foodie bits and pieces. It also has indie shopping, a spectacular cathedral, brewery tours and popular restaurants for a respite from all the sightseeing. Alton Water (40 minutes) is a top spot for canoeing and sailing, and any rainy days are covered by the swimming pool in the leisure centre at Stowmarket (15 minutes). A day trip to the Norfolk Broads (45 minutes) to hire a day-cruiser boat is also a firm family favourite, or you might like to have a go at punting along The Backs in Cambridge (an hour) – if that’s too much like hard work, take a look at the city’s historic colleges instead. When the kids need a runaround, hire bikes for off-roading at Thetford Forest Park (half an hour) or let them try out the treetop rope courses at Go Ape Thetford (45 minutes). If only a beach day will do, Aldeburgh (an hour) has a sand and shingle stretch that's safe for swimming, and a popular fish and chip shop for after you’ve had a dip.
