  • Peaceful family-run site five miles from the Suffolk coast
  • Close to RSPB Minsmere and in a stargazing area
  • Playground and space for kids to run around; dogs welcome on site
Like a relaxed stay not too far from the sea? Make your way to Haw Wood Caravan Park, a peaceful site just five miles from the Suffolk coast. This family-run site has roomy pitches and plenty of space for the kids to run around (including a splendid playground). The location is rather stunning too, just a short drive from the Suffolk Heritage Coast and the county towns and villages of Aldeburgh, Southwold, Dunwich, Snape Maltings and Walberswick. On site is a gorgeous café and farm shop (both with varied opening times throughout the year, but open every day during the school holidays): check out the shop for essentials and tasty treats or the café for a chilled-out cup of coffee or breakfast (April to October only). Depending on the time of year, there may also be pizza or fish and chips up for grabs later in the day; detailed opening times will be sent to you before your arrival. Other on-site facilities include a shower and toilet rooms, all with underfloor heating, along with three family bathrooms and a fully-fitted shower room with disabled access. Children and dogs are very welcome at Haw Wood Caravan Park. The farm is also popular with stargazers, nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers who come for its closeness to RSPB Minsmere; there’s even a turtle dove cooing around on site – among other wildlife visitors…

What customers say

Immaculate bathrooms, spacious spots, and helpful staff get thumbs up. Great for dogs and exploring Suffolk. Some found showers a bit short and Wi-Fi iffy, but cleanliness and overall vibes are top-notch.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Over the weekend, cafe area open at strange times.
We stayed till Tuesday and once the site emptied on Monday. The cafe was closed, so no where for breakfast on site.

Disliked These days wifi is the normal. They had wifi, but only at the cafe/reception.

From the manager: Just as a reference the cafe is open at this time of year;
Fridays 4-8pm, (Fish and Chips are served 5-7.30pm)
Saturdays 8-11am for breakfast and 3-6pm for afternoon shop and Pizza
Sundays 8-11am for breakfast.
Over the Bank Holiday weekend being refered to, we also opened Sunday 3-6pm and Monday 8-11am for breakfast.
Not too strange we hope!

Excellent, great facilities, very friendly, free roaming chickens.

Electric grass pitch

Liked All in All Absolutely loved every bit of Haw Wood, spacious pitches, we originally booked 1 non electric pitch and one electric, we then changed our minds, we emailed and the same day got a response, requested to be on same pitch which actually wouldn’t have been so able, so they offered us an electric pitch which we paid the outstanding fee for an electric, and put us next to each other.

Most friendly people when we arrived they were there with great details, full facilities, gave us in’s and outs , showed us to our pitches, facilities inside are so clean and 10/10 level for hygiene, I see the cleaners in there 3 times throughout the day cleaning making sure everything was in tact.

Food is great, cafe & shop on site is brilliant, great toys for kids, all your basics and more if you forgotten anything.

We forgot our BBQ and Dan I believe he’s name was, brought us a bbq to our pitch (for no fee) we brought the bag of coal on site.
Prices inside the shop are better than your normal shop price which makes you buy more.

So friendly , out going and we met some lovely people and some new camping buddies who hopefully will meet up with them this year again and camp at Haw Wood.

dog friendly , had dog beds and blankets outside for your dog to also be cozy whilst having a drink or two and free dog biscuits/treats

Great park for kids , loads of space to roam around.

Local attractions

Whatever your preference, you’ll find it on the doorstep of Haw Wood Caravan Park or within half an hour’s drive, whether it’s walking through the forest, strolling on the beach, visiting a historical building or sampling – yet again – a local Adnams ale or home-cooked pub meal. The Adnams brewery with regular tours is at Southwold fifteen minutes away: it would be rude, after all, not to sample the local produce. Outdoors, the wildlife to see in this area is first-class: wild deer in the local fields, a string of Dartmoor ponies in Dunwich Forest and the must-do birdwatching at the RSPB reserve at Minsmere ten minutes’ drive from Haw Wood, where there are also guided walks, safaris and nature trails for walking and cycling through woodland, heathland and reed beds (bike hire is available near the campsite if you’re not bringing your own). The Suffolk Wildlife Trust has dozens of wildlife areas along the coast and inland, including several near Southwold, Aldeburgh and Framlingham. It also co-manages the Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve between Walberswick and Southwold, where there are over 500 species of butterfly and moth fluttering about the marshes and meadows. After sampling the Adnams, stroll around the seaside town of Southwold to see its beach huts, award-winning pier and thriving harbour. Head towards the fish and chip shop on the High Street to see the blue plaque as a homage to George Orwell whose parents’ house was in the town. Also within fifteen minutes is Dunwich, now a tiny village but once a populous port city with a population half the size of London before most of it was lost to the sea; the free museum telling the tale of the town is open from March to October. Fourteenth century Leiston Abbey and twelfth century Framlingham Castle are 15 to 20 minutes away, and one of the best historical highlights in the country – Anglo-Saxon burial centre Sutton Hoo – is within half an hour. We’d also recommend just getting into the car, switching off the satnav and seeing where you end up: there are plenty of pretty villages within easy reach, or go further afield to the Norfolk coast and Great Yarmouth, and shopping in Norwich and Ipswich. This area is one of the clearest in the UK for stargazing too; there’s an observatory at Seething twenty minutes away.
