  • A 20-minute drive from the popular seaside town of Southwold
  • Private bathroom, kitchen and barbecue for each unit
Wake up in the best way possible at this luxurious spot in the Waveney Valley: Dawn Chorus Holidays is a symphony of outdoor quiet and comfort on the border of Suffolk and Norfolk, a five-minute drive from the market town of Beccles. The farm is home to a variety of livestock including chickens, sheep and cows. Guests are welcome to take a wander around the farm to see it in action, and can also collect freshly-laid eggs for a tasty rural breakfast. If you'd like to see more of the surrounding countryside, set off on one of the three circular walks from the site or a number of cycle routes nearby. To cool off, there's an inviting lido in Beccles or you could make the 20-minute drive to Southwold for a walk on the beach followed by paddles in the sea. Each unit has its own private bathroom with a toilet and shower. For cooking, there's a kitchen in each unit along with a barbecue/firepit and picnic table outside. Guests can also order meals to be delivered to their accommodation – try a full English breakfast in the morning or a warming stew in the evening. For supplies, there's a spread of shops and supermarkets in Beccles and pubs serving food.

South Down shepherd's hut

Liked: I stayed in one of the Shepherd Huts and although only there for 1 night in early January, I had the best experience! The hut is cleverly designed and beautifully decorated inside, with features you’d expect in a nice hotel room. Double sized shower, contemporary bathroom, soft fluffy towels. Even fresh eggs, milk and a couple of homemade cupcakes! The kitchen was well equipped and the double bed was incredibly comfortable… one of the best nights sleep I’ve ever had! The hut was warm and cosy and Helen the host was attentive & friendly . Check in was easy.

Disliked: Nothing at all, it was all lovely

Texel shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: We loved everything about this little shepherds hut. A great place to escape the noise and rush of town/city life. I was really cosy and comfortable with everything you needed. Hosts were really friendly and very quick with communication. We will definitely book again and book another accommodation so we can include our 2 girls and 2 dogs.

Texel shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: I chose this campsite because they were happy to take one night whereas lots of others wanted a minimum of two nights at the weekend. We really found a gem of a site. From the beginning, we were given plenty of information to make us feel welcome and prepared. We got in touch with the owners in advance and they answered our query about the cars very quickly and easily. The site seemed lovely and I'm only sad that we arrived in the dark so didn't get to see it in the daylight other than briefly as we left. I loved all the little details like loose leaf tea in the container and eggs and milk in the fridge. I was a bit worried about the bathroom as we hadn't seen any pictures in advance but I didn't need to worry as it was a very decent, small but therefore warm, bathroom which I felt was essential for a visit in November! It was such a nice space and I would love to come back again and sit out around the fire pit and watch the stars. It was a beautifully clear night and there is no light pollution but that did make it about 1C so we didn't sit out this time! The owners had obviously thought of lots of little touches as there was a torch and spare blanket in case we forgot our own, a little collection of games and a selection of cleaning bits so it really felt like a family home rather than a hotel which is exactly what we were looking for.

Disliked: I don't think there was anything that I disliked but if I am honest, I think I would have struggled with the space if I was there for a whole week. I would totally recommend the space/site for a short break away though.

From the manager: The little shepherd huts are wonderful, but probably better suited for a short break.

Norfolk Horn shepherd's hut (no pets)

Liked: The shepherds hit was clean, warm and comfortable. The owners went a long way to make guests feel welcome with little extras such a free cup cakes, milk and tea, marmalade, jam and bread etc in the fridge. We had a wonderful breakfast in the morning after a good night sleep.

Disliked: It was a bit small compared to our house but what do you expect, we are were staying in a shepherds hut. No Wi-Fi but that was actually quite nice

From the manager: Glad you enjoyed your breakfast, that was delivered cooked to your door.

Local attractions

To explore the bountiful East Anglian countryside, you're not bound to roads and paths: head to Beccles (five minutes' drive) and canoe your way down the Waveney. It's half an hour's drive to Dunwich beach and the surrounding Suffolk Coast National Nature Reserve, a mix of gorse-covered heaths, wild cliffs and sand dunes. If all that windswept nature leaves you fatigued, make the 45-minute trip to Wroxham for boat trips, exploring the inland wetland wonders of the Norfolk Broads from a comfy seat. For a wander down various avenues of the past, it's 15 minutes to the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum and the East Anglian Transport Museum and half an hour to the 19th-century grandeur of Somerleyton Hall. If you like some roaring with your walks, head to Africa Alive! (20 minutes) to explore an 80-acre slice of the continent, and its assorted cheetahs, gibbons, rhinos and zebras. More wildlife? It's half an hour to the Oasis Camel Park, for rides on the hump-backed desert beasts. Top off your nature encounters with the watery residents of SEA LIFE Great Yarmouth, 40 minutes away. Younger travellers can shriek to their hearts' content on the thrill rides of Pleasurewood Hills, half an hour away, zip through the trees and ride boats down the jungle rivers of Bewilderwood (50 minutes) or get up close and personal with a pterodactyl or two at the ROARR! Dinosaur Adventure theme park (50 minutes).
