  • Peaceful site surrounded by mature trees and ancient hedgerows
  • Half an hour's drive from Norwich and an hour to the Suffolk coast
  • On a family-run smallholding; sheep, goats, horses and poultry on site
Sitting in a pretty East Anglian meadow, this small rural site is an excellent spot for relaxed rural breaks on a traditional family-run smallholding. With mature trees and ancient hedgerows as a backdrop and livestock like sheep, goats, horses and poultry roaming about, Meadows Edge is every bit the relaxed farm getaway many people yearn for. This is an out of the way spot, with simple facilities in the corner of the meadow like an eco-friendly composting toilet and an off-grid shower for guests' use. You'll need to use your common sense and show respect for the wildlife and the smallholding's animals while you're here – this can be as simple as disposing of your rubbish properly and closing gates behind you. The surrounding south Norfolk countryside is excellent for walking, cycling, wildlife photography, birdwatching and other relaxed rural activities. Close by, you also have pretty market towns like Diss, Wymondham and Attleborough, all of which can be reached in under 20 minutes by road. Day trips to the historic cathedral city of Norwich (30 minutes) or to the gorgeous beaches of the Suffolk coastline (an hour) can also be easily arranged.

Blackbird non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Louise our host was very friendly and helpful. It was a quiet away from it all site in a beautiful enclosed meadow. We had the pick of the pitches when we arrived. Facilities were basic as advertised but very well thought out and clean. Thinking outside the box you could get warm water for washing up from the very good shower! A washing up area with bowl, sponges etc was provided. This was our first trip out in our van and we thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay.

Swallow bell tent

Liked: Our stay was for our annual father/son trip. Louise was welcoming from the moment she saw our car. She gave us time to settle into the tent and then introduced herself. The site was clean, well maintained and if you’re looking for somewhere quiet this is great. The bell tent was spacious and comfortable. Louise took time to show us around and introduce her animals. If you are a star gazer this is a great place as the night sky is amazing.

Disliked: Nothing.

Swallow bell tent

Liked: We went to this campsite as our first holiday away together. It was a really good place to visit for this, and we both had a really good time. We were quite far away from other campers, so it felt very private, and nice. The toilets and showers were as expected, and they were adequate as facilities. Our host, Louise, was very welcoming to us, and answered all of our questions throughout the weekend. We were able to use the fridge in the main facility. This was also a good location for what we wanted to do, and we visited Diss, Aslacton, and Norwich. These were all very short journeys, and were easy to get to, as it was just the number 1 bus. The Bell Tent we stayed in was very clean. We had a double bed, some furniture, and storage space. We were very happy with the glamping experience. It was very reasonably priced as well, at only £55 a nice, nothing else was as good for the money in the area

Disliked: One thing we thought could have been improved, was access to a hot water tap. The absence of this seemed strange, as there was hot water in the shower.

Liked: Louise is a fantastic host! We really enjoyed every part of our stay - Louise was kind in recommending an event that was on locally and we attended and enjoyed it very much. The views at the meadow are fantastic of the clear stary night sky, the site had everything we needed for our stay - would definitely recommend this site for people wanting a quiet relaxed break away

Local attractions

Want to learn how to fly? Norfolk Gliding Club, where you can take your first solo flights, is a mile from Meadows Edge. You don't have to ascend to such lofty heights if you don't want to, of course, and the immediate vicinity has lots to do at ground level, from picnicking by the mere at Diss (20 minutes' drive) to discovering trains, engines and other contraptions at the Bressingham Steam Museum and Gardens (25 minutes). For long walks or bike rides, you might like to visit Thetford Forest Park (30 minutes), where there is also a Go Ape for treetop explorers looking for something with a bit of pizazz. More rural roaming can be found in the Norfolk Broads National Park too, the edge of which is about half an hour's drive to the east of the site. The cathedral, castle and shopping opportunities on offer in Norwich (30 minutes) also beckon if you'd like a more urban adventure, while slightly further afield you can – and should – make arrangements to visit such spectacular seaside resorts as Southwold or Lowestoft (both an hour).
