  • Refined glamping stays in luxury stargazer tents at a Norfolk estate
  • North Norfolk coast and Sandringham Estate within a half-hour drive
  • Superking bed and firepit for each tent; shared camp kitchen
Schlamping – what on earth might that be? Well actually it’s a trademarked word for a brand of glamping that’s got a particularly luxurious element to it. And given that the people behind it have gone to the effort of coming up with a new name, you can be sure that a whole lot of thought has also gone into the experience itself… You’ll be able to immerse yourselves in that experience at Godwick Schlamping, a peaceful and most luxurious site within 100 acres of Norfolk parkland about 10 minutes’ drive from Fakenham. This may well be off-grid camping at its most refined – you’ll stay in a spacious and well-appointed Lotus Belle stargazer tent set up in the meadows to the north of the hall. The tent’s name refers to the fact that you can open up the canopy to look up at the stars while still staying comfy and cosy in your bed: how fabulous is that? That bed is, of course, a luxurious superking with top-notch bed linen – and there are a couple of pull-out beds for the kids if you’re planning a family adventure here. Other facilities in the tent include a woodburning stove, a table and chairs, a dressing mirror, solar lighting and a selection of smart furniture designed to make the place feel like home. Outside, each tent has a mini firepit, and a small trug of wood for this can be purchased from the site owners. Shared facilities close by include two showers, two toilets and a camp kitchen kitted out with a gas stove, kettle, toaster and mobile cool box (plus hairdryers to help you get dolled up for a night out).

Stargazer Hattie bell tent (pet friendly)

Liked: Bell tent was an excellent size and very comfortable. Nice to have somewhere to hang clothes, a sitting area and a wheelbarrow. Bed was warm and camp kitchen was a great addition.

Disliked: Only enough hot water for 1 person to shower. We tried using both showers after and both were icy cold. Potting shed toilet was infested with spiders, some of which we believe were false widows. Also a lack of instructions for the toilet itself (how to move the flap). Transparent canopy could have been cleaned prior to our arrival so we could actually see the sky.

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback. We have changed the potting shed composting loos to loos that are flushable. We hope this gives an all round better experience. Can't guarantee that those pesky spiders don't infiltrate these though as they are outside and close to nature still. The showers are normally hot for both people, so I am surprised you had this problem and as it hasn't been reported to us before! The stargazers have a perspex canopy but this is very hard to clean, I'll speak to me window cleaner and see what he says. Thank you for your feedback.

Local attractions

A fascinating trip close by is to the ‘lost village’ of Godwick, one of the best-preserved deserted medieval villages in Norfolk. It’s only a few minutes’ walk from Godwick Hall and it’s got a heritage trail to help you explore (or you can book onto private guided tours). More walks can be had along the trails through the 700-acre nature reserve at Pensthorpe (15 minutes’ drive), which also has eco play areas for the kids. Alternatively, you might like to have a stroll through gardens fit for royalty and take a tour of parts of the house at the Sandringham Estate (half an hour). Other ideas for days out include Norwich (45 minutes), packed with historic buildings from across the ages and said to have a pub for every day of the year, or excursions to hotspots on the gorgeous north Norfolk coast like cute Wells-next-the-Sea (25 minutes) or the huge sandy beach at Holkham (half an hour).
