  • Quiet wild camping site off the A1M (Junction 15) in Cambridgeshire
  • A five-minute drive to Hamerton Zoo Park; 45 minutes to Cambridge
  • Butterfly Bloom Mobile Kitchen for breakfast and evening meals
Off-grid and hidden away in a Cambridgeshire wildflower meadow, Lodge Farm Camping is a wild camping spot where you come to chill out, listen to birdsong and maybe catch sight of red kites wheeling in the skies above. After dark, owls fly overhead and hopefully you can catch a couple of gorgeous sunsets, and as thereā€™s no light pollution, you may well spend hours gazing up at the starry sky on clear nights. This may be a wild site but it does have solar and gas-fired showers (in a converted horse box) powered by renewable energy. Thereā€™s chemical disposal on hand too, and a fresh water supply a short walk from the pitches (pack a torch for night-time forays). The Butterfly Bloom Mobile Kitchen on site serves breakfast and evening meals, as well as freshly-ground coffee such as espressos and lattes. Have them delivered to your pitch or tuck in in the orchard, a lovely corner of the site where guests can cosy up with a book and soak up the countryside views. Families are very welcome, but there are not many facilities for kids. However, if your offspring like reading and surfing the web (most likely), they can keep themselves occupied as wifi is strong on the site. Each pitch comes with its own small firepit, and a bag of wood is included for use each day ā€“ youā€™re also welcome to stoke up the firepit in the orchard, and huddle up in its warmth by night. Despite being deep in the countryside, the site is close to Junction 15 of the A1M and there are pubs and takeaways in Sawtrey village (both five minutesā€™ drive).

Main Field non-electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: What an amazing campsite, lovely owner and we had really nice pitches located in their orchard. The shower was brilliant, toilets nice and clean. Great facilities all round. We ordered some hot food in the evening and coffee, which was all perfect after a long days bike ride to the campsite. The views were fantastic and was really nice getting the firepit going in the evening. Owner is super friendly, very welcoming and helpful. We will definitely be making plans to return again in the future. I have visited many campsites and this is one of, if not the best. Awesome campsite.

Liked: Quiet and peaceful. Good facilities with hot showers, nice to have a breakfast delivery option too.

Disliked: There were a couple of dog poos on the pitch, had to be careful. I love to walk barefoot on campsites.

From the manager: Thank you for staying with us Just replying to your feedback We are a very laid back, wild camping site, and people do appreciate this, its not everybody's cup of tea, but most love it. We are very hot on Dog Mess, and we have never had any issues before, as each pitch gets checked after guests leave, just to ensure they are clean. You should have contacted myself and l would have come and sorted the issue for you, this is why l give my contact details should you have any issues. l have only found out about this on this feedback, which is very sad. We believe out rates are extremely competative, we do not charge for any extras, which is something not many other campsites do not offer. Our customer service is always good, its what we proud ourselves on. We are an adult only site, so giving feedback on child friendliness is not appropriate Cleanliness again is important, being in an open field it is dusty as we are a working farm. I wish you had raised your concerns with myself, rather than leave it on feedback

Peace and quiet, great for relaxing , plenty of space between the pitchesā€¦

Local attractions

If you manage to drag the youngsters away from their screens, cart them off to Hamerton Zoo Park (five minutesā€™ drive) for a day of mini-train rides and the chance to see bears and big cats. At Rutland Water Nature Reserve (45 minutes), see how many wild birds you spot from the hides or watch the ospreys on their nest (in summer). Close to the reserve is Aqua Park Rutland (40 minutes), where you can all let off steam on the floating climbing courses. Other ways of getting active locally include horse riding (10 minutes) and playing golf (20 minutes). Itā€™s easy to lose yourself for a day of looking around the historic colleges and chapels of Cambridge (45 minutes), and taking the kids on a punting trip along The Backs. Another town that deserves attention is Oundle (25 minutes) ā€“ if the kids get bored of admiring its Tudor and Georgian architecture, pack them off to the skatepark or the playground in Barnwell Country Park (20 minutes).
